  • A Great and Terrible Beauty
    • Rated 4 stars

I actually quite liked it, hence the four stars instead of three. There was something about it that made me think that, although it was weird, dark and confusing in places, it's one of the better books I've read recently. It got a bit boring around the middle, but that didn't take long to resolve itself and soon enough I was pretty gripped. The one thing that bugged me though was Libba's overuse of describing words - phrases like "my trunk is placed on the GREAT stone steps outside the LARGE wooden doors .. Tom raps with the GREAT BRASS knocker.." really irritated the hell out of me, especially when it continued for the majority of the book. I know things like that are in other books, but the author's writing in this novel was so specific that it was easy to notice flaws like that - most of the words flowed, but then occasionally there were parts that made my head hurt. I also didn't like the whole cliché beginning: girl goes to boarding school, it's a spooky boarding school, she makes friends with the outcast, gets tricked by the popular girls.. etc etc. But, flaws aside, this was actually a really good read. No idea whether or not I'll be getting the sequels right away, though.

  • The Tales of Beedle the Bard

The stories were better than I first thought them to be, and Albus Dumbledore's commentaries were really quite entertaining and interesting. No, I'm not saying that sarcastically. =P Wasn't anything better than 'good', though.

I got this book after watching the musical. If I'd got it before I probably wouldn't bother watching the musical. In other words, it wasn't good. But it wasn't in any way bad, or horrible, or any other words like that. It was just not as good, or as nice, or as pretty, as the musical. But then, I knew from everyone else that it wouldn't be, so really, I'm not that disappointed. Overall it was a good book, and the only bit I really didn't enjoy was around the middle, after Shiz and before Dorothy. That middle part was so boring that I had to read two other books before finally pushing myself to attempt it again. The beginning, including before Shiz, and the ending was actually really good, however, that all may be just because of the familiarness of it all, considering the parts in Shiz were similar to the musical, and the end was similar to the Wizard of Oz, etc. If it weren't for the familiarities I would've thrown it out the window months ago, because even though I admit to liking it, the writing style and feel/atmosphere/whatever just wasn't to my liking. It has made me wanna go read the proper Wizard of Oz now, though, haha.

  • Nineteen Minutes: A novel
    • Rated 4 stars

This would've got 5 stars - because I'm a sucker like that and absolutely loved this book to no end - however, Nineteen Minutes, although a great book, enraged me in a way that only Picoult fans will know about. Her previous book, The Pact, which also had Jordan McAfee in it, was the novel that got me into Picoult's writing, and I loved it. Alot. However, although the stories were different, I did find so many similarities between the plots.

    **

For example, the fact that Peter and Chris (from The Pact) had fathers who were hunters, and therefore took their guns to do the shooting with. The fact that Chris and Emily grew up together, and Peter and Josie grew up together. The fact that Melanie and Gus were best friends then broke up, and the fact that Alex and Lacy were best friends then broke up. The fact that Emily got pregnant, and Josie got pregnant. The fact that Chris went up on the stand in court, as did Peter, and both ended up saying things that Jordan hadn't told them to.

    **

Overall I loved the book, but there were enough similarities - those I mentioned are just the memorable ones - to fill like, two pages in an A5 notepad. The twists at the end were similar, too. So, really, unless you couldn't give a crap about things like that - the similarities may have even been intentional - I don't recommend this to anyone who's already read The Pact. Likewise, don't read The Pact if you've read Nineteen Minutes. The Pact was so much more thrilling than this one in the twists and turns, probably because they were new and exciting, so it's a bit unsettling reading a book written ten years after that is literally the same story but with different characters and a different circumstance. But don't let that put you off, because again Jodi Picoult has managed to produce a great and thought-provoking story that I will definitely read again.

  • My Sister's Keeper
    • Rated 4 stars

It was so hard for me to not give it 5 stars. Gripping, emotional, thought-provoking and just plain awesome, My Sister's Keeper is the third book by Jodi Picoult that I've read, and no way have I ever been disappointed. This one felt more like reading The Pact than Second Glance did, just because of the lawyer, the court scene and the way the families were put against each other. I loved all the back stories, the flashbacks, and how Sara made me so mad that I sometimes wanted to chuck the book across the room (the same happened with Melanie in The Pact). Definitely an amazing read, but there's definitely something about it that stops it from matching up to the previous books by Picoult I've read. Loved the ending, though - even though I accidentally spoilt it for myself on Wikipedia, the whole thing was still unexpected and brilliantly thought out, and something that although made the rest of the book seem a tad pointless, definitely added to the storyline. I definitely recommend anyone and everyone to read this.

  • The Lovely Bones
    • Rated 3 stars

I enjoyed it, really I did. But it failed to excite me, therefore it didn't turn out like I thought it would. I found it hard to read in places - a bit dull during some parts - however, I'll admit it was pretty. And that's why I gave it three stars; because it was a really pretty story (even considering the subject) and Sebold's writing had such an optimistic feel to it, even when it was a tad boring. Overall a good read, but not the greatest.

  • Of Mice and Men
    • Rated 3 stars

I really don't know what to think of this book. We were reading it in English in preparation for our Literature exam. And, like all the crap that schools/boards make us read for exams, this book really - even though it is meant to be some kind of legend - didn't please me. It was all too small, too quickly finished, and in the end it all seemed quite pointless. I thought what happened at the end was really disappointing, too. But I did like it before I knew that it was going to end that quickly, just because it did seem to be building up to something much longer. Meh. I definitely do understand the meanings this book was putting across, though. I don't regret reading it, just wouldn't ever bother with it again.

  • Double Cross
    • Rated 5 stars

I thought the word 'conclusion' on the back of Checkmate had been legitimate. But I was wrong. What a disappointing ending (even though I loved it so much) the third installment would've been! Double Cross has got to be the best book in the series. Ironically, this book didn'y even include Sephy much, or any mentions of Callum, or even Callie Rose for the most of it; my wish came true and [SPOILER ALERT] the boy with Callie at the beach at the end of Checkmate was Tobey, and it's his story we follow. He reminded me alot of Callum, and the feeling I'd gotten while reading was similar to the one within Noughts and Crosses which I hadn't felt since. Double Cross is incredible, and satisfying in every way, definitely five stars for sure. =]

  • Second Glance: A Novel
    • Rated 5 stars

I don't know why, but what Ross said on page 31 (UK version/Hodder 2008) has turned into my favourite quote:

"What makes you walk past thirty thousand people without a second glance, and then you look at the thirty-thousandth-and-first person and know you'll never take your eyes off her again?"

I didn't think Picoult's books could get any better after reading The Pact. But they just did. Although it was hard to get into to start off with, cause of all the characters etc, all the little subplots in this book made me as hooked as I was when reading the previous novel. The way ghosts were portrayed was beautiful, the ending was amazing and made my heart literally race in my chest, and Lia's story and all the twists and turns that came with it made me 'wow'. Oh god, if any of her other books are as good as this, then my fivestar favourites will be full with just Picoult books - I think, after two books, I can say that she's my favourite writer. I highly recommend Second Glance to anyone.

  • The Distance Between Us
    • Rated 3 stars

I really liked it, found it really interesting and great to read. However, I don't know who else agrees with me, but I found it just a little too overwhelming with all the confusing backstories (all the family members, that is, not Nina and Stella at school) that really weren't that relevant to the main story. It just seemed she was building up two characters - Jake and Stella - that in the end weren't even needed, although saying that, it was incredibly easy to empathise with every character she'd given us. Overall pretty good, but no more than that.
