I've been an avid reader since I was 6 years old and I still manage to make the time in my busy life to read at least 1 book a week (which is down a lot from when I was in school - we're talking 3 or 4 books a week). I generally read a good mix of bestsellers, critically acclaimed and award-winners, classics and chick lit with a few... more »

I was hoping this was going to be some soapy fun for a summer afternoon spent reading at the park but I was sorely disappointed. Apparently this is the start of a trilogy and assuming that this is supposed to be the book that draws you in, you'd think the characters would be more compelling and the family intrigue a little less predictable and, well, dumb. I think I'm going to have to pass on the rest of the books. I'm already bored.

As always, I just really love and enjoy the world that Harris has created in Bon Temps. Is the writing stellar? Not really. Is the mystery particularly compelling or hard to figure out? Nope, not at all. Yet, I always rip through these books with true glee. I'm so very sad this series is over and done with now, because it was a fun little treat to look forward to as a way to usher in the spring.
In terms of how she wrapped things up, I think it's totally fitting and was kind of easy to see coming. I like that we got to visit a little bit with all of the major characters from the past and that Sookie got the ending she deserved. Kudos!

This was one of those reads that I enjoyed but in kind of a neutral way. I never felt like I was truly connected to any of the characters yet there was definitely truth to all of their stories. I doubt this book will stay with me, but I am interested to read the sequel just to see where everyone ends up.

I have to say that, as much as I enjoy the setting and I sort of generally like the main characters, this book was really boring. The whole Maggie/David/Stan thing was just tiresome to sit through since it's obvious where it's going to end up eventually. The girls, although slightly less annoying to read, still fell victim to the whole love interest/makeover storyline that YA often defaults to and it just felt played out. If there are more to be added to the series I probably won't read on.

    Nowhere but Home: A Novel

I friggin' love everything that Liza Palmer writes. Her characters are always so layered and relatable and the scenarios are always something I've never read before. This book managed to be sweet and funny and heartbreaking all at the same time - I actually shed real tears while sitting in the park reading the last few chapters. I wish she'd write faster! I want more!!

I wish the story hadn't wrapped up so quickly and I hadn't been cheated out of the "villain gets his comeuppance" scene, but I had a grand old time with this book. Who wouldn't want to go on kidnapping road adventure with their Grandmother?! Hilarious!

This is totally my kind of story so I was really looking forward to diving in but I found it to be really slow-moving and the characters all hard to get inside and relate to. I just wasn't invested enough to feel like the reading experience was anything other than a slog to finish the book. Disappointing.

A pretty quick, rip-roaring read with a little bit of service-y history thrown in for good measure. I wish it hadn't been quite so predictable but whatever, I enjoyed it nonetheless.

I wish her disaster books were longer because they're always so exciting. I'd love to have longer to savour the danger. I read this as a teen and after picking up a vintage copy at a used book store, I spent a delightful couple hours reliving it. Fun, fun, fun and I love her descriptions of how fire moves. Really cool.

I have a soft spot for boarding school-set books and I had fun with this one even though nothing staggeringly interesting happens and the lead character is kind of boring. Still, it was a pleasant Sunday afternoon read and I'll definitely grab the next one from the library.
