Have you read the booki PEACH BLOSSOM PAVILION by Mingmei Yip? I am currently reading it and finding it very enjoyable. I have read several other books abot China & Japan. I like books from other cultures. We were lucky enough in our ciy to have a showing of the Sons of Heaven soldiers. They made the books seem more realistic The size of the stone soldiers was surprising, Then to read the story of why they were sculpted; made the books more real. PEACH BLOSSOM PAVILION is very different from books I usually read but I am finding it very interesting.

The following books aren't exactly historical fiction (they're actually autobiographies with a lot of artistic liberties), but you might want to check out The Confessions of Lady Nijo and Musui's Story. You seem to have an interest in Japan, so I thought you might enjoy them. Lady Nijo was a concubine to Emperor Go-Fukakusa. She spins an artistic, overly dramatic, and sometimes quite comical tale of her life at court. Musui's Story is about a poor and absolutely useless Tokugawa samurai. He was a scoundrel, a liar, a bully, practically illiterate, and so forth. At one point his father had him locked in a cage for a year because he was such an embarrassment to the family. Katsu Kokichi wrote the account of his life in order to tell his grandsons what NOT to do with their lives, but it makes for an entertaining read for the rest of us.

Hi, Sorry it has taken so long for me to respond about the book Taiko,, I never figured out exactly how that response page worked. I enjoyed the book because at the time I had read it (years ago) I had just returned from Okinawa. I had learned many things about oriental customs and warfare, and this bookk fit right in. Good period piece. Ben
