Tolstoy's in depth exploration of both the ledgendary and historical Merlin. We get a detailed study of Merlin's life and times, Dark Age Britain, and druidism. His scholarship is outstanding. The reader will come to learn the man behind the myth. A must read for all those interested is ancient Britain, Arthur, Merlin, and druidism.

    The Importance of Living

I regard the discovery of one’s favorite author as the most critical event in one’s intellectual development.
    -Lin Yutang

My exposure to Chinese culture and philosophy comes, these days, through my experiences with Tai Chi Chuan and various other martial arts and Qigong. This study brings me close to many Chinese and Taiwanese people. None are more gracious, accepting, and friendly. I appreciate how their culture blends into ours so seamlessly.
Lin Yutang’s The Importance of Living is, to me, the best exploration of this blending and this contrast between our two peoples.
He is an essayist, writer, philosopher, linguist, and a cultural critic, among other many talents. And, The Importance of Living deserves to be on your bookshelf. From his table of contents get a quick feel of what you will experience: Approach to Life, Spirit and Flesh, On Being Mortal, On Having a Mind, On Human Dignity, On the Sense of Humor, How About Human Pleasure, On Growing Old Gracefully, On Conversation, The Art of Reading, The Art of Writing, and last but not least, The Return to Common Sense…
The best peek at this work is the blurb on the book’s cover:

‘The Classic Bestseller that Introduced Millions to the Noble Art of Leaving Things Undone.’

You will laugh. You will cry. You will wonder what in the heck you have done with your life.

When I was beginning to master Taoist meditation this was a great way to focus. Taoist and Chinese wisdom abounds here. For after you have achieved the void of zazen and want to work with your Qi energy come to this book.

A unique perspective on the Merlin legend and the man's true identity. Great speculation on the nature of the Druid and duridism. Worth the read.

  • Arthur and the Lost Kingdoms First edition by Moffat, Alistair published by Trafalgar Square Hardcover
    • Rated 5 stars

A new theory of the true, historical King Arthur. A lot of convincing evidence hotly debated by other 'experts' of the history and legend of Arthur. One of my favorites.

Everything you knew, you thought you knew, and that you needed to know about one of the most interesting women in history and legend. Worth the read.

Fascinating study of arthurian fact and legend from a unique perspective. Worth the read inspite of her often difficult style.

An interesting and informative guide to Arthur's Britian. Great for its time but newer study does not confirm all of his material.

Interesting Arthuriana. Well written. I do not agree with all of his conclusions.

  • Autobiography of Mark Twain, Volume 1
    • Rated 4 stars

A seemingly endless collection of Twain's wit, wisom, and vision. Twain to the bone. Excellent for delving into now and again.

It gets a 4 from me because it is not a 'can't put it down' flowing bit of prose.
