StoryHeart

I am in love with stories. I prefer books with quirky, off-beat heroes (more often, heroines) & authors who create rich, whimsical worlds that carry me away. I also like reading history, nature, travel memoirs & books about art & artists.

I'd love to hear from curious, eccentric, freethinking, creative people...you know who you are!

I was just looking at your bio and wondered if you had read The Electric Michealangelo by Sarah Hall? It definitely has quirky characters, although the main character is male. There are strong, interesting female characters too. It's about a tattoo artist who came to Coney Island from the English seasidei n the 1920s. My son is a Gemini and I told him this would be a great story for him-really fun characters, interesting setting, interesting period, and prose that is playful and lush. It's a whimsical story, but it has enough heart to make it matter.

I think I'll read aloud from A Tale of Two Cities for an hour or so. They'll be begging for the workhouse.

mmmmm... brownies. That sounds fun! I tried to celebrate Dicken's birthday here at work and got a lot of blank stares. Who? Dickens? What the Dickens? Then they just shake their heads and walk away. Sigh.

I love Alistair Simms as Scrooge also :) Enjoy!

    Hiya, StoryHeart!

My imps arrived this morning (so quickly these imps travel across Canada) and they’re lovely! I went to bed this morning smelling like a great brownie. I can’t seem to escape my obsession with smelling like baked goods. :)

Hope yours arrive quickly and you enjoy them!

    Hi Tracy,

Lately, I haven't enjoyed much of what I've been reading and it's getting frustrating! I finished Cloudstreet by Tim Winton and really enjoyed that. I liked The Tiger's Wife, I loved The Scarlet Letter much more than I expected, that is now one of my favorite books. I liked Sea of Poppies very much, but was so disappointed with the sequel, River of Smoke that I stopped reading it.
I think I need to admit to myself that I'm choosing books with high literary merit and not just simply reading what is enjoyable, edifying, intelligent, but not so likely to earn a PhD in Literature because really who cares if Wendy Whidden reads Proust before she dies? I'd rather read for fun.
I usually have good luck with Bookers and I realize that literary fiction is what I like the most. I just ordered Precious Peace about athe 7th son of a poor Black family who's mother lies and tells the world is a daughter. I love books that take place in the rural south: Toni Morrison, Alice Waker, Eudora Welty, Flannery O'Conner. I also like books set in India and for some reason Australia!

    Nice to meet you!

    Hello

I looked at your impressive shelf and found that we have 80 books in common. That's a rather large percentage of my shelf, not as much of yours. I've not read travel memoirs, books about nature, art, or artists, but I think we have similar tastes in fiction. I have read started some of the very literate books-Magic Mountain, Swann's Way, for example, but I can't honestly say that I enjoy them. I also don't get anything from popular fiction, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Twilight kind of books. I like books that have a good story, great characters, excellent writing, and that leave me thinking about the book long after I've finished it. I used to look for books from the Man Booker lists, but I've read the've lowered their standards a bit.
What did you think of Jonathon Strange & Mr Norrell? I'm not opposed to very long books, but I have so many books on TBR list and am finally at a point in my life where I have the luxury of time to read, that I don't want to invest time on a so-so book.

At least you have been to Africa, it is nice when people treat you like family.
I have my photo link on my main page but here it is if you want a look, http://www.pbase.com/alisonduflon it is something that I love to do, but don't make money at. ;-{ if you go under FL sunrise and sunsets they are mostly either side of my house, the lake here is very photogenic. I moved here 3 years ago from Connecticut.

I try and get back to Guatemala once a year, but didn't make it this last year and we are planning on selling the house, which is historical and very large. I will always have some family down there as 2 of the 4 of us kids live down there. I also would love to go to Africa, I actually have friends living in Kenya, Namibia and Uganda, but south africa would be a lot of fun. Also to go back to Europe, mainly Spain, Italy and France. Croatia, Sri lanka. I love to take photos so that is what I would be doing.
Do you have a kindle ? I read both but I have been downloading tons of free (for a day) kindle books here is one that looks fun that I just found http://www.amazon.com/Wander-Year-Couples-Journey-ebook/dp/B005BW2X52/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1328375864&sr=1-1

    Hi Tracy,
I would love to find some money to travel as well, I read so much of other places, that I want to experience it all as well. I just finished the "Bindi Girl" one and loved her love of India and the fresh approach for me at least of a spiritual quest through the country with a lot of sense of humor thrown in. I am now reading "Maya Roads" by Mary Jo McConahay which I am finding extremely interesting and I am learning a lot that I didn't know. I grew up In Guatemala and we still have a house there, so it is fun to read about a place you are familiar with.

I see you read sixty lights, I really liked that book, I haven't gotten around to after image yet but it is awaiting me on my shelf. I think you might really like Gem Squash Tokoloshe (Africa), the language of flowers, The Voluptuous Delights of Peanut Butter and Jam (Africa) and I loved the quirky travel log of The adventures of Bindi girl, just to mention a few.

Hi there, I do like the kookaburra and miss their lovely call. We do have a few books in common and a few more now that I have browsed your shelves :-). I notice that you have rated The Poisonwood Bible 5 stars. I started to listen to it on audio and didn't like it. Think it may have been the narrator. Will have to try again in print.

    Thanks for the "friend request".

Daemons are always a bit of a bother, and object strenuously to being mailed anywhere.

Well, I have to talk my friend into Greece first! I’m not sure why, it’s just somewhere I’ve always wanted to visit and the alternative seems to be London, which, while lovely- is somewhere I’ve already been. My first plan was actually camping in Alaska... that was shot down rather quickly though. Sigh. Some people just don’t know how to have fun!

Can't wait for the imps. I was just thinking how that sounds to someone that might read this, not knowing what imps are. I'll mail your imps on Friday- hope you find one or two that you like. Wow. That sounds really odd.

Oooh, no can't recommend Onterrible. I suppose it minght be different if you didn't work for the Onterrible government :) I will be picking your brains about Greece! I'm planning a trip there (well, trying to talk my friend out of London and into Greece). My friend and I are planning a trip for our 40th birthdays and I've decided on Greece.

You may be onto something there. I look very much like a nice round seal in my winter gear!

I’ll mail you the Pumpkin Masala Roobois, if you like? I’ll gain weight wearing it... you’d be doing me a favour, really. I also have a few of the anniversary limited edition scents that don’t really work on me. Phoenix at Dawn, Phoenix at Midday,... at Evening and Midnight. How do you feel about egg nog?

My birthday season starts in July. Sigh. So very inconsiderate. Some people think only of themselves. :)

I think you’re right! You know what’s even better? My down filled parka, snow pants and giant -40 knee-high winter boots, you know the waterproof ones with the big treads. I tell you, StoryHeart, I go out in those and the Canadian men positively throw themselves at me. It’s quite ridiculous. ;-)

I have bought a few new scents! I got some lovely Yule limited editions:

Snow White 2011- fresh with a hint of floral
Midnight Mass- sigh, like the inside of an old church, but I must say it’s not that lovely on.
Colder and Colder- minty and fresh
A Torrent of Light- my favourite!! Eucalyptus, mint and ozone.

And one that I think you might like: Pumpkin Masala Rooibos, it’s a tad strong on the pumpkin but really delicious! It makes me hungry when I wear it. They have the Lupercalia limited edition scents up right now, and they sound beautiful, but I’m sitting this one out as I spent an obscene amount of money on the fall/yule scents.
