I am a tour guide in Seattle for both the city and Mt. Rainier.

Besides reading, I bike, walk, cook, garden, wander urbanly, hike rurally, kayak. I trust my bookshelf will reveal that I have many interests: novels, non-fiction, historical, science, business, food. I do like how Shelfari "randomly" mixes them up; that's how we are as... more »

What does it take to win a Gastoni?
Well, for starters, you better write a book on a topic I love. Next, your writing style has to be exquisite (to the point of awe and envy). Finally, your story telling has to be transporting. To sum it up, I quote Somerset:

“When I read a book I seem to read it with my eyes only, but now and then I come across a passage, perhaps only a phrase, which has a meaning for me, and it becomes part of me.”

On a more personal note, the time I spent reading and listening to books this year was pure escapism. It felt like I spent most of it in a hospital waiting room (which is not true). When I’d start obsessing about my girl Gracie’s cancer I’d crack a book and ride it hard to block the worst of my fears. At night, when I needed to find a path to sleep, I’d take the easy road and escape down a story line. A good book is a gift.

Our family has so much to be thankful for this year. For starters, Carrie and I have our girl back! She now has about an inch of fine blond hair sticking straight out of her 5 year old head. At school they call her Q-tip. Her teachers call her Q-T-tip. I’ll post a couple holiday pictures of the family up on her website: caringbridge.org/visit/gracegaston

Your friendship is counted among my many blessings. Merry Christmas to you and your family, My best for the New Year, Dave

Steve Powell... you did not give this book 5 stars!? What did I miss that you saw in it? I respect your choices and your reviews, but on this story we chose different paths. It happens. We'll meet up on another one. Best, Dave

Polo (the book) was highly educational and Bergreen’s account was very approachable, but frankly, I was bit disappointed. The book just fell short of my expectations. I appreciate Bergreen’s monumental task; How to lift an ancient travel writing from another world, century and language and turn it into a three dimensional modern adventure biography. Instead, Bergreen delivers a two dimensional story that never appeared fully formed. Another interpretation of my flat response could be argued - my beef may not be with Bergreen, but with Marco Polo. The excerpts of Polo’s popular books are highly flamboyant. He is clearly obsessed with riches, power and with the sexual appetite of Eastern rulers. Polo often brags in excess and supports his sensational stories with endless numeric tallies (5,000 wives, 10,000 boats, etc.) The book left me hungry for the real story behind the endless lists and dusty caravans. Maybe I’m asking for Historical Fiction (which I deplore) but I don’t think so. If Jared Diamond can write a compelling and running story about the entire history of Man’s civilizations (Guns Germs and Steel) in one fire cracker of a book, Laurence Bergreen could have lifted it up a notch.

Steve, I saw you picked up Bonk also. How could we not, what a fun title. What did you think?

    Bonk / Mary Roach
A rollicking and random “bonking” through the up and down and down and dirty of all things sexual. Sure it is science writing, in the same way that Andy Rooney is a serious news reporter. Roach writes to both enlighten and to throw an eyebrow. Often her writing and wit are so sharp that she over delivers on both. The sexual enlightenment is so very, very vivid it is cringe worthy to the point of leg crossing. If you don’t yell, “Ouch!, Gross! Too Much! and Wait a Minute!” at least ten times, you’re less of a prig and a prude than this pecker-head. Amazingly for the smarmy subject she covers, her writing is never disrespectful to the topic at hand (pun intended). Some times the detail is uncomfortable to the point of nausea... but never disrespectful. Conclusion: A very strange mix; the bedfellows of hard science and hard-ons. There was way too much science for the merely sexually curious and a way too much devotion and detail focused on the sexually bizarre to be taken scientifically serious. What can i say, Mary Roach sent me all a twitter.

This is incredibly late in replying, but yes I work as a Business Researcher/Information Specialist and put the business & marketing books I've read to very good use. It is an essential part of my job to keep up on management trends - besides that, I find it a fascinating combination of human nature and economics. I really enjoy reading those aspects from books like that. Three Day Road is very much an incredible story, I've never read anything like it to be honest. I recommend it to everyone, I hope you get a chance to read it too! :0) (After all the library books maybe LOL)
