I live in California, and finished a master's degree in counseling psychology, but the fun isn't over yet. I'm a first-year doctoral student, now, in Depth Psychotherapy. As one might imagine, I am passionate about psychology, mining the depths, and making the most out of one's life. I'm all about catharsis, so I adore books that make me laugh,... more »

    Hey Girl,
You sound better so there must be a moving date set. Good. I guess my visiting date will depend on your moving date. If you're leaving Monday, we're screwed. I've got Kindergarten screenings next week. Extra money and dedication. Shopping, walking, trying to write and in general just getting into my summer attitude (which is a tad small and will require more time at the gym to fit into it). Survived meeting with He Who Must Not Be Named and wonder if I have at last reached the point I'd rather not continue that particular friendship. Oh my Dear, life is strange and messy, marvelous, mysterious and sometimes so painful you wonder how you can bear it. Love you.

Will keep my fingers crossed. You sound happy. Ready for the read. Ready to be done with school. Ready to stop pining. Ready.

Found this cool book called Travels' with Odysseus: Uncommon wisdom from Homer's Odyssey. Will let you know if it's any good.

    Love you back.

Shoot, too bad there isn't an easy way to edit after submitting a comment. Sorry about the sloppy writing, but perhaps sloppy is better than no post at all.

    Hi Stephie,

Thanks for adding me to your list. I don't read as much as I used to photography and working with computers takes up a lot of my reading energy now. Browsing shelfari has become a bit of a hobby for me.

I have a website where I share my photo journaling. Birds, surfing, wildlife and the outdoors are some of my sites themes.

Looking through your shelf make me think that you might like this book: A Wizard of Earthsea (The Earthsea Cycle, Book 1) by Ursula K. LeGuin. The books descriptions says, "Le Guin challenges her readers to think about the power of language, how in the act of naming the world around us we actually create that world.... Great challenges await Sparrowhawk, including an almost deadly battle with a sinister creature, a monster that may be his own shadow." I think this book is wonderful and I have read it a number of times.

Plato is an author that we have in common. It's hard to find anyone who has read him seriously. I found Plato's Phaedrus description of friendship worth pondering and reading over and over again, "The soul in her totality has the care of inanimate being everywhere, and traverses the whole heaven in divers forms appearing--when perfect and fully winged she soars upward, and orders the whole world; whereas the imperfect soul, losing her wings and drooping in her flight at last settles on the solid ground-there, finding a home, she receives an earthly frame which appears to be self-moved, but is really moved by her power; and this composition of soul and body is called a living and mortal creature... then looking upon the face of his beloved as of a god he reverences him, and if he were not afraid of being thought a downright madman, he would sacrifice to his beloved as to the image of a god; then while he gazes on him there is a sort of reaction, and the shudder passes into an unusual heat and perspiration; for, as he receives the effluence of beauty through the eyes, the wing moistens and he warms. And as he warms, the parts out of which the wing grew, and which had been hitherto closed and rigid, and had prevented the wing from shooting forth, are melted, and as nourishment streams upon him, the lower end of the wings begins to swell and grow from the root upwards; and the growth extends under the whole soul-for once the whole was winged."

Another book that I think is great is James Joyce's, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.

Thanks for sharing you reading list.

Hope your day went well too. So tired. So tired. Not sure I'll be up very long. Miss you too. Would love some time in SF. Am watching Elizabeth, The Golden Age. It's not as bad as the first one but then maybe I'm just tired.

I hope you will take the time to view my YouTube book trailer at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-t0K34iU6g. I am doing some research about potential characters to play the lead role in the upcoming movie. Hope you can help me out. As Ralph Eggleston Director/Production Designer of Pixar Animation Studios said,
"I LOVED the book! It's a missing, ENDLESSLY fascinating link to the history of Hollywood. Thank you for researching and writing it!! I hope it's been widely well received, as it deserves to be." Best wishes. Gaelyn

Noting your interest in both psychology and philosophy, I'm wondering if you've read Norman O. Brown's "Love's Body"? Influential in intellectual circles in the '60's and '70's, it's now a classic, mixing Freud, Blake, Buddhism, Roheim, Klein and others in a purely creative work. On my list to re-read... one of these days.

Nice to see someone else who mixes modern lit with political theory (not to mention modern poetry and psychology).

    Stephie,
I have known Dennis Slattery for the past few years. While we have never met in person, we have talked many times over the phone and have similar interests. He contracted me to promote Grace in the Desert. (If you would like a free copy just let me know and I will mail to you.) The book is memoir and spiritual journey where he visits some 12 monasteries in the West and Southwest. It was part of a sabbatical. I enjoyed it very much, (I like memoir) and was able to relate since I am familiar with the culture. When you get a chance, check out my website, faithalivebooks.com. I started this 10 years ago to promote and sell through amazon spiritual and religious books. If you are interested, let me know your interests and I will mail a collection to you. If any interest and time permits, just write a short recommendation or review and I will place on http://www.faithalivebooks.com
