StellaMac

I love to read. I read slowly but surely. I have learned in recent years to just put down a book which doesn't interest me and not waste my precious time reading something I simply don't like. I love to read a lot of different types of books but generally nothing too blokey (Tom Clancy or Lee Child) and I'm suspicious of very prolific authors-... more »

  • An Evil Cradling: The Five-Year Ordeal of a Hostage
    • Rated 5 stars

Exceptional and moving account by Brian Keenan of his capture and years as hostage in Lebanon. This book shows how the human body and spirit can sustain years of abuse and inhumane conditions all the while growing, learning. I highly recommend reading this book for an inspirational understanding and insight into mankind at its very worst and its very best.

I loved reading this book about a newly-wed couple anticipating their wedding night. It's beautifully written, Ian McEwan is a master of creating an emotional intimacy between his characters and his readers (well, me anyway) which I just adore. There was a point in this story where I thought something absolutely disastrous was about to happen which had me turning the pages almost faster than I could read them. I raced to the end to of this (admittedly short) book and finished the last page fully satisfied that I'd read something worth my time.

I was so looking forward to reading this book, having read so many positive reviews about it from many different places. I must say I haven't been more disappointed by a book since I don't know when. Such flat characters and amateurish writing, I had to give it up at 200 pages, life is too short to be spending it reading tosh like this. The best thing about it is the picture of Gerard Butler on the cover. I'm left completely bewildered by the popularity of this book.

No Country for Old Men is a thrilling page turner and if you're a fan of McCarthy and/or The Road, you'd probably get some kind of literary satisfaction from this one too.

A great epic of historical fiction weaving the lives of many well drawn medieval characters together through the building of a cathedral and town. With stories of love, war, murder and revenge through the near-1000 pages there's something for everyone in this doorstop of a novel. Well worth reading.

My son and I just finished reading the last book in the Harry Potter series and we loved it. There were lots of unexpected and quite frankly, upsetting, trials and tribulations along the way to the big climax but it was all made up for in the end. The epilogue was my favourite chapter in the book which delighted me when I read it out loud to my son. In stark contrast to my enjoyment of it, he just cringed- he's not ready for the idea of his favourite characters all grown up!

I read this book years and years ago. It was at the time, and still is my favourite of the Archer novels I read. The only one I would ever consider rereading, to be honest. Loved it.

It's been about 15 years (probably more) since I read this book but I remember it was one of my favourite Jeffrey Archer novels. A real page turner, I raced to the end.

It's been about 15 years since I read this book, or any other Jeffrey Archers books, to be honest, but I remember enjoying this one thoroughly.

Well laid out, lovely pictures- a great accompaniment to the bar and addition to a collection of recipe books.
