This book was in my TBR stack and moved up after I read the online story - Promises Kept. PK brought me to tears.

In Fall from Grace, we read the story of Jack and Anne Morgan. If you read Promises Kept, then you know the heartwarming everlasting love story of Bryce and Delia Cooper, Anne's parents. Anne grew up unhappy with the time that her father did not spend with his family because of his successful medical career. She meets Jack Morgan - a great doctor in training. His career is his focus and their relationship is rocky from the beginning for that reason. She doesn’t want to be involved with someone who will put his career before his family. She lived through that as a child, but something undeniable pulls her towards Jack nonetheless.

The story opens with Jack having a stroke. The blurb on the back says “Paralyzed by a stroke, he has no choice but to turn to his ex-wife, Anne—just as if they were still married.” When I read that I thought, who had no choice? It seems the choice would be Anne’s. Many times while reading I can’t help but put myself in the Anne’s position. Would I have done this or that? “Would I have taken care of Jack?” Possibly, yes - for the same reason that Anne does – her child. Maybe even for the love that is still lingering beneath the hurt. I find out as I read the story that both Anne and Jack made mistakes. It’s true that there are three sides to every story – mine, yours, and the truth somewhere in between. Real second chances are rare mostly because many of us (speaking for myself mainly) are not open-minded enough to try again. I said once about another book that I read that I love a good emotion-filled story where the hero and heroine are not the picture perfect beings portrayed with more true to life characteristics. This describes Fall from Grace. I could identify with Jack and Anne emotionally. Kristi Gold does a wonderful job taking you through the ups and downs of this relationship showing me that sometimes it pays to give love another chance.

I can see now that I will love the new Everlasting Love line.

  • The Elusive Bride (Harlequin Historical Series, No. 539)
    • Rated 5 stars

I love the last line of this book - "And to think I met you in a convent garden!"

The first time Rowan met Cecily, she was hiding in Sister Goliath in the garden where he was seeking food and a moment's refuge. The second time he encounters Cecily, she saves from bandits. When he realized that she is the one is he is to marry by royal command, Rowan chooses to keep his identity secret. He hasn't been able to get her off his mind since their first encounter. He poses as John - his half brother - sent to fetch her. Although he has agreed to marry her, he has been betrayed once by marriage and doesn’t want history to repeat itself. He hopes Cecily will come to want him as a man and not the warrior sent to save her home. Cecily is no meek and mild woman of her time. She is headstrong and tells “John” he can come along with as she travels to find Rowan her intended as long as he doesn’t slow her down. As their adventure filled travels take them through some dangerous time times, Cecily falls for “John”. Rowan struggles with falling for Cecily as the demons of his pasts arise. Can he trust her with his heart and all secrets?

I love a good historical and I loved the strong characteristics that Cecily possessed. That she could tell a warrior not to slow her down was priceless. If you like historicals, you should definitely read The Elusive Bride and any other Deborah Hale book from that category.

Arikos (Arik) once an Oneroi is now Skoti (a renegade dream hunter). He lives by no rules and by nature has no conscience - no emotions, except he seems to have developed a strong passion for one woman whose dreams he invades. He strikes a bargain with Hades for two weeks as a human for a human soul - the soul of the one who has driven him to such a bargain.

Megeara (Geary) Kafieri vowed on her father's death bed to find Atlantis and take the ridicule from his life's work. She has lost several family members as her father relentlessly followed his dream of discovering a place that many do not want found. The pursuit to fulfill that vow is not easy. She faces road blocks at her turn until she pulls a handsome stranger out of the sea. A handsome stranger with a face she has seen many times in her dreams - Arik.

Though Arik does seem a little odd and not quite right, he is able to get the permits that Megeara needs to excavate the area she is sure will lead to her discovery of Atlantis. Megeara soon finds out that those who do not want Atlantis found have the power to keep it from happening.

As a human, Arik discovers love and a conscience. Now his dream of becoming human to be with Megeara has turned into a nightmare. Will he be able to save Megeara from the fate set before her?

If you haven't read a Dark Hunter book, I highly recommend it. This is the first full length Dream Hunter novel although we have heard about them in previous Dark Hunter series. Any book that comes from this series is a must read.

  • Sword of Darkness
    • Rated 4 stars

I read the cover of this book and had a laugh right off. Sherrilyn Kenyon is quoted as saying "Kinley MacGregor writes fantasy the way I would". Well if you read them both you know that they are one in the same. Although she usually writes historicals under Kinley MacGregor, Swords of Darkness and the Lords of Avalon is more on the fantasy realm hence the quote.

Sword of Darkness tells the tale of Seren of York, a weaver's apprentice. She dreams of leaving the life she has to make one of her own. After pouring her heart into making her scarlet cloth, she presents it to the guild masters in hopes of becoming a journeywoman and guild member. She's left bereft when she told it's not good enough. She leaves and meets two men claiming to be knights of the Arthur's Round Table. She is to be the mother of the next Merlin. They have come to protect her from the minions of death. She flees and runs into another knight who offers to see her home without harm. Kerrigan is evil incarnate or so he says. He has lived alone in darkness for centuries. He is the most powerful and feared in his world. He has long ago ceased to be human. His goal is to use Seren to claim Arthur's Round Table either by barter or death. Seren runs from her fate. Does her true destiny lie with Kerrigan? Her fearlessness and compassion reaches a part of him that he thought long gone and may be the thing that either saves them both or bring them to their deaths.

I have never been disappointed by a Sherrilyn Kenyon/Kinley MacGregor book. Sword of Darkness was a great read, very fast paced.

Pierce Grayson is feeling a little under the pressure. He alone is the last man standing along with his baby sister Sierra. It seems it's his turn to face his mother's matching making skills. Ruth Grayon is determined to see her children happily married and her record for success his outstanding. He has watched his three brothers fight and lose the battle. He admits they are happily married and in love, but he does not have a desire to follow their paths. He has been enjoying women and storing up memories and has no desire to stop. He's ready for his mother. He has seen her in action.

When his mother asked him to pick up Sabra Raineau, Broadway actress, from the airport, he is certain she is not the woman his mother has chosen for him. She wouldn't dream of matching him with someone who is only in town for a month. One thing he knew for sure is that his mother wants her children nearby. There is nothing stopping him from enjoying the instantaneous attraction he feels when he lays eyes on Sabra especially when he can sense those feelings are reciprocated.

Now only time will tell whether Ruth knows this son as well as she does her others. This is the 4th book in the Graysons of New Mexico series. So if you have missed the other you must go back and read. These stories have been fun to read and I just know baby sister, Sierra is going to put up a fight when it's her turn. Ms Ray was kind enough to give us an excerpt (more like a teaser) for Only You coming in October.

  • Stranger In My Arms (Arabesque)
    • Rated 4 stars

This is the 12th book of the Hideaway series that started 1995. This series is one of those like any of Brenda Jackson's families (Madaris, Westmoreland, Steele) or Francis Ray's Falcon/Taggart/Grayson saga for me. I've got to have it and read it as soon as possible. I don't like to hear about others reading and I haven't yet. It drives me crazy. This one almost slipped by me. I didn't realize it was coming so it was not on my " Upcoming Books I Have To Read" for list. Well when I heard about it I went out and found a copy and of course it went to the top of my reading list.

Merrick and Alexandra met in the 8th Hideaway book (No Compromise) at a Michael Kirkland's wedding. Michael is good friend to Merrick and cousin to Alexandra. In Renegade , the 10th book, they are married and her brother Gabriel (the hero of Renegade) sings at their wedding. For a Hideway reader, we know the basic history the couple but nothing else. None of the emotions that took them from friends to lovers to married couple. Stranger in My Arms gives you all that as well as a closer look at how being orphaned at birth and shuttled between foster homes affects Merrick's relationship with other and the conquering power of love.

Alexandra was raised by the untraditional brother of the family. She's independent and has worked hard not to be seen as a daughter of the elite Cole family. Merrick has lived as many personas and lives as a CIA agent keeping away from close intimate relationships. Both have no desire to be involved or married and agree from the beginning to be friends. Their story shows that friendship is the best foundation to love and some people can not be just friends. It's a story of patience and learning to adapt and compromise for love.

I must say I loved this book. I've always liked Merrick's character. As I read parts of the books, I would say "oh, I remember that", "now that makes sense". Ms Alers has been building Merrick's story from the beginning giving us bits and pieces and it was great reading his story. If you have read the other Hideaway books, this one really ties some loose ends. You get to see old friends re-connecting. It stands on its own, but for me the experience was better having read the other stories. There's connection to Hidden Agenda and Vows as well as the above mentioned books. Alex parents' story is told in Heaven Sent.

  • Absolute Fear
    • Rated 5 stars

If you are a romantic suspense fan and you haven't read Lisa Jackson, you are missing out. Absolute Fear is the sequel to Shiver, where the killer warned that this is just the beginning, as he died. One year later and the killings have started again. Eve Renner gets a call from her childhood friend, Roy Kajak. He has evidence and he needs her to meet him. It's late and she fights with her boyfriend, Cole Dennis. From there she goes to the cabin, finds Roy dead, and gets shot - the last thing she remembers is Cole aiming a gun at her. With a faulty memory, Eve tries to put her life back together as Cole is released for the murder of Roy and her attempted murder.

Now more bizarre killings are occurring. The victims with only Our Lady of Virtues Hospital as a common factor are killed ritualistically with a series of numbers tattooed into their bodies. The killer has a strong obsession for Eve. He’s taunting her with strange phone calls, following her, and luring her to the place where it all began. Eve is left to trust Cole, the one man who may be responsible for her attempted murder.

This book was excellent. I love Lisa’s writing style and the detail she gives. Every little detail is a clue to the big picture. She gives you just enough to think you have it all figured out, but she always leaves an element of surprise. Another reason I love this book was the connecting factor not only to Shiver where Detective Reuben Montoya finally took the spotlight as a central character, but to Cold Blooded (Detective Rick Bentz's story). With other connecting stories, you will find Detectives Montoya and Bentz usually as minor characters investigating a series of bizarre killings. In Absolute Fear, the secondary storylines bled into the central story - everyone was connected and having read the other stories I loved every detail. I read the 432 page hardcover book within 2 weekdays. It was a fast paced story that kept my attention from the beginning. Hot Blooded, The Night Before, The Morning After are other great reads with where you will be able to see the detectives in action.

  • Only You (A Grayson Novel)
    • Rated 5 stars

Only You brings baby sister Sierra Grayson to the forefront. If you have read the Graysons of New Mexico series, you have watched all the brothers fall in love in the midst of their mother’s schemes. Sierra has been there all along sometimes very upset with her brothers for falling. There was even a pact made between those left to stand strong and she still watched her brothers take the plunge. Men! She said at one time. I couldn’t wait for Sierra’s story. When I learned that Blade Navarone was slated to be the hero in Only You, I knew this would be a great story. We meet Blade as a close friend to Faith in Dreaming on You – book 3. He’s as mysterious as he is ruthless in his business. There is even a hint of vulnerability in him among his dangerous temperament. Sierra is the baby of 5 children with 4 brothers and a meddling mother determined to marry off all of her children. Sierra is determined to break away from her mother's schemes and her overprotective brothers. She applies for a job with Blade’s company and seemingly takes her destiny in her own hands. Ruth Grayson is something else. We have watched her manipulate and scheme on her children (in love of course) and it seems that Sierra has gotten away from under her mother’s plot. Or has she? I knew I would love this story and it seems Ruth Grayson is not finished for there are others who are in need of her help.

When Justine walks in on her husband with another woman, she flees their cabin, promising a swift divorce. Andrew pursues her in his car, intending to get his wife back. But when his car goes over a cliff, hours later Justine is looking down at her comatose husband, wondering how it ever came to this. Now she is faced with a difficult choice about whether or not to pull the plug. And if she does, is it because of his cheating ways or because its the humane thing to do? Should she keep faith for his supportive mother that hell revive from his coma? Then, when an old flame resurfaces, will Justine follow her heart or her conscience?

I read this one in one day during a road trip to Dallas. Francis Ray is one of my must read authors. Justine & Andrew Crandall and Dalton Ramsey, the main characters in this books were sometime overshadowed by the Brianna Ireland and Patrick Dunlap, secondary characters and their love affair. I connected more to their story.

  • Friends: A Love Story
    • Rated 5 stars

I really enjoyed reading the love story of Angela Bassett and Courtney Vance. I have always admired Angela - would love the have her toned body. This book was like reading two autobiographies in one. Each chapter alternated from Angela's to Courtney's POV. I could really identify with Angela and her life of failed relationships and mishap dates. She spoke honestly about her various relationships until she made the decision to let go and leave it to God. She made the decision to not have sex until marriage and kept to that decision. Courtney spoke of an 11 year relationship where he was not emotionally able to give that person what she needed. It wasn't until he hit rock bottom and worked on himself that he was able to be in a healthy relationship. Angela and Courtney met briefly when Courtney came to Yale for an orientation. They went out as a group of colleagues. In one of the chapters from Angela's POV, it mentioned that Angela and a couple of friends took a perspective student to a local cafe - and that student's name was Courtney. As each of their careers grew, they would see each other from time to time - they hung out as friends in the same industry. The book is title appropriately. They were open and honest about themselves and their relationships. Their marriage was not depicted as a story book fairy tale. Both had to work hard at making their relationship work. It was interesting to see how they went into it with the attitude that divorce is not an option. Both a shy and a little stubborn, but both realizing that it takes God and compromise to make it work. There is even some relationship advice given at the end of the book from each POV deprived from their experiences.

Again I say I enjoyed reading this book and recommend that others do the same – read and enjoy a great love story.
