    Deadly Sexy

    by Beverly Jenkins
    • Rated 5 stars

There once was a time I would say I like Beverly Jenkins’s contemporaries, but I love her historicals. Beverly Jenkins and historical romance are synonymous. Now I am rethinking Ms B and her contemporaries. The Edge of Dawn, Edge of Midnight and Black Lace (all related) are really good to great books, but then came Sexy/Dangerous with agent Maxine Blake. If you haven’t read it, you must - full of action with a female heroine as tough as any man. I loved it! Now Deadly Sexy brings Maxine’s sister JT Lady Blake to the scene – the toughest sports agent around. Reese Anthony, who Jessi mistakes him for a truck driver, gives her a ride back to Oakland when her car breaks down. She is sure her breakdown was the deliberate actions of a disgruntled ex-employee. JT may be tough as nails, but Reese Anthony is not just any trucker driver. The tension and sparks between these two are instant and electrifying add in some a demented ex-employee turned wanna be competitor sports agent and Deadly Sexy lives up to its name. With first Sexy Dangerous now Deadly Sexy, Ms B has taken her contemporaries to another level. As is her signature with these novels, her H/H are descendants of her historical characters. I’ll rate them both as excellent reads that I highly recommend.

Kirstie Rivers ended her affair with Lucio Masterton when he refused to marry her not knowing she was pregnant with his child. His love for power, money and success took priority over everything else in her eyes. She keeps the child to herself to protect her from a father who can’t give her the love and time she needs.

Fifteen years later, she contacts Lucio as her daughter’s desire to know her father increases. She reluctantly agrees to let him spend time with this child to get to know her, but only if she comes along - to protect her daughter emotional well being. Who’s going to protect Kirstie from Lucio when he realized he never should have let her go?

I love my alpha men, but Lucio was a bit much. Lucio does things in my eyes that are unforgivable. No physically speaking, but he crosses the line when he can't persuade Kirstie to take him back. Which is why I gave this book a love rating.

    Communication is the key.

Max Fortune and Diana Fielding-Young had a sizzling summer affair in Max's homeland - Australia. The affair ends when Diana gets a call from home. Years later when the two meet again, the sparks are still there along with much antagonism. He thinks she jumped from his bed to marriage with another man. She thinks he never loved her. I guess that’s what happens when you jump in the bed first. You don’t know if your relationship is based upon any other than sex. Can they get it right the second time around? With the many misunderstandings between them, it will take much communication

Blackmail?! Is it wrong for a man to use any means necessary to get the woman he wants/loves?

Diego de Santo can find only one way to get Cassandra Preston-Villiers to go out with him after being turned downed on numerous occasions. Blackmail?! Right or wrong that how this story starts. She loves him, but refuses him every chance she gets. What's a man to do?

I admit I love these books usually the hero is demanding, determined, and sometimes even arrogant but what can I say.

Life is full of second chances. You just have take them and make the most of them.

This is a different kind of second chance story. Monette Victor spent 15 years in jail for a crime she did not commit. She's no saint and she will tell you that herself. I first read about Monette Victor's in All I Want is Forever which I re-read after reading Soulful Strut. Now she's out and she's bared her soul in a tell-all memoir book. She's living high on life right now - radio talk show host, counselor for at risk young women and author working on book two. She has no time for romance. Along comes Jayson Odum, who is by far her complete opposite in every way from political views to as she says - he's so clean he squeaks. She pushes Jayson away, She thinks he deserves someone better in his life. She’s dealing with issues from her past and doesn’t want him hurt. Problem is he wants her and he won’t let anything get in his way including Monette.

Sometimes running from your past means leaving behind your soulmate.

Talia Marchand leaves her hometown in Louisiana to start a new life after receiving a scholarship to a private high school and later college. She leaves behind a mother, who time and time again couldn't get her life right to take care of her children. Talia as well as her older brother were shuffled to and from foster care.

Now a successful political consultant Talia never wants to go back “home”, but home is calling her nonetheless. Derrick Guillory walks back into her life bringing painful memories and secrets that she would rather soon forget. In the midst of their troubled teen years, Derrick and Talia were once young and in love. Being with Derrick means dealing with the hurts of her past, Talia would rather run. Together Derrick and Talia learn that there are some things that in life you can’t hide from and there are some things worth all the trouble.

I read All I Want is Forever in 2002 when it first came out. After reading Monette's story - Talia's mother, I had to go back and revisit Talia's story. Talia was distant in Soulful Strut, re-reading her story reminded me where the distance came from.
