Please, do not demonise me simply because I joined a women's group. Dee has already slung enough vitriol in my face. In all honesty. care more about "Women stuff" than I do about "Men stuff." I don't want to cause a nuisance; I just want to talk. Unfortunately, the immediacy with which I am ejected from the group prohibits me with communicating effectively with you ladies. So I extend a plea of friendship and I receive Dee, throwing epithets in my face and painting me as a curmudgeonly hoodlum. I'm better than that.

    Hello Stacy,

Just wanted to drop you a quick note to mention a few things.

First, from all the posts I've seen of yours, I wouldn't think you would "attack" me.
But there are times I post and my words are taken the wrong way, sometimes because
of the way I wrote it and sometimes not. What I was trying to do was make sure
I hadn't inadvertently ruffled your feathers...it would be the last thing I would want to do.
You're such a great asset to the writer's group, and the community as a whole.
When you post, I know there will be at least a few treats to take away with me.

Once again, sorry if my posts bothered you in an way. It was not intended.

Keep on posting...because I'll be reading ;D Happy Holidays to you and your family.

    Hi Stacy,

My name is Kate. I'm 16 years old, and a few weeks ago I signed with an agent who is going to represent my YA novel. I wrote my first novel-length manuscript at age 8, but this one (my fourth) is the only one I've felt is near ready for publication. I've gone through about five rewrites so far. I had two offers from different agents, and the woman I picked is someone who I feel very comfortable with and who has been working above and beyond to help polish the manuscript. I know I'm young, and I've read that many people in the industry discourage teen writers from publishing. I sent out queries simply to see what would happen, never expecting to be offered representation, but within a few weeks I had two agents showing interest in my manuscript. I feel slightly overwhelmed entering the industry at such a young age. I have very little knowledge of the legal proceedings of publishing, and although I've researched as much as I can I would appreciate input from published authors. If you have any advice for me, I would love to hear it!

In a moment of pique and frustration Virginia wrote an open letter to Oprah, and shared it with a few writer friends who are going through the same thing we are. Now the letter has started to go viral--getting a lot of repostings and inclusions in blogs, newsletters and on Facebook, so in case you hadn't seen it, we wanted to share our plight, the plight of many black authors with you, readers who have supported us all these years. http://twomindsfull.blogspot.com.

In reality Oprah is just a metaphor--a name that might get this subject the attention it deserves. Because when you have a publication like Library Journal listing their 31 Best Books of 2009 http://ow.ly/HDU7 and the "genre" fiction list includes Street Lit --8 books but no category for contemporary African American writers, we are really in trouble.

We are trying to encourage diversity in reading--we believe books should be windows, not just mirrors...

Yeah, each library is different: like the Montecito library is a little Heavier on mysteries and histories than the Carpinteria library.

We gave the Carpinteria library 20K this last year to buy books but we (at the Friends) didn’t really like the choices they made. We know what authors sell well in the used bookstore we run, and it just seemed they weren’t listening to us.

Hey…do you appearances (talks to groups) to promote you books?

    Hey Stacy, love your website.
I’m on the board of the friends of the library in Carpinteria Ca. and I just noticed that our library system (the Black and Gold Cooperative system, covering the entire central cost with 33 branches) does not even have one single copy of one of your books.

Hmmm…Something should probably be done about that.

    Stacy,
Thanks for the good advice in the writers forum. I'm re-committed to editing again and seeking a publisher. My characters deserve a chance for a larger audience. That and I've got a trilogy outlined and won't write number two or three until the initial novel is published. My characters are driving me crazy, so I need to get moving.

    Thanks again.
