I'm your average garden variety SF and fantasy geek. I tend to read equal amounts of science fiction and fantasy, alternating from one genre to the other. I am trying to mix in more non-fiction and "literary" fiction at the moment, after about 10 years of more or less exclusively reading SF&F.

    I agree about Kage Baker! Well-written;however seemed to fall apart towards the end of the series (too much deus ex machima). Do you like space opera (Alastair Reynolds, Iain Banks for example)?

    I loved "Singer of Souls" and requested the sequel from the library. The ending was fitting and was open-ended enough to entice the reader to purchase the sequel. For some strange reason, I can't see your review for "A Princess of Roumania". It seems to be a Shelfari bug they are working on. I have the book on my shelf too.

    I really liked 'The Light Ages', something a bit different from the standard fantasy fare and of course the sequel will be read as soon as I can get my hands on a copy.

    I really enjoyed it. I found some of his theories a little far-fetched, but on the whole he is a very astute cultural critic. It doesn't hurt that he is hilarious as well.

    For true crime, I would recommend two by Harold Schechter. Deranged: The Shocking True Story of America's Most Fiendish Killer and Fiend: The Shocking True Story of America's Youngest Serial Killer. For historical fiction, you should check out The Egyptian by Mika Waltari. War With the Newts by Karel Capek is classified as non-genre fiction, but definitely has SF characteristics. A great read!
    For non-fiction, Fast Food Nation was very good.

    Sorry for not being a very good co-mod at Beyond Reality. :(
    I promise I'll check in more regularly.
    My last read? Oh, you must mean "Bad Boy". The book wasn't as well written as other true crime novels I've read, but it is quite disturbing and one I suspect will stay with me. Not only did it get inside the mind of a vicious serial killer, it also revealed the flaws of the US criminal justice system. How's the baby?
