I'm your average garden variety SF and fantasy geek. I tend to read equal amounts of science fiction and fantasy, alternating from one genre to the other. I am trying to mix in more non-fiction and "literary" fiction at the moment, after about 10 years of more or less exclusively reading SF&F.
I manage an online discussion group called "Beyond Reality", where we discuss one SF and one fantasy novel per month, nominated and voted by our members. Come say hi! (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Beyond_Reality/)
I'm very careful and deliberate in how I rate books:
5 stars: A classic. One of my favorite books. A book I've read and probably re-read. Must-read for fans of the genre.
4 stars: Excellent. A step above the average fare. Recommended to readers of the genre.
3 stars: Good. I enjoyed reading this one.
2 stars: Average. I finished reading it, but it had some definite weaknesses.
1 star: Bad. I probably didn't enjoy it enough to finish it, or if I did, skimmed through the last parts.
