    Thanks for "friending" me. Don't know if some your new TBRs are based on a visit to my shelf, but I can't say enough good about Dorian Gray or Neal Stephenson. I also just finished Mary Doria Russell's The Sparrow and it completely blew me away -- religion, science fiction, anthropology, linguistics, and deep thinking all in one book. (Burned through 180 pages of the sequel last night.) You might enjoy it as well.

    How art thou?

    The DR trip was incredible. My favorite "social justice" trip so far. We did a student trip and then a teacher trip. I posted photos on facebook so my friends could check them out. Not sure if you use that site yet. It's somewhat similar to shelfari.

    As for the book, it seems to be going well. A colleague and I have a table at the Teachers Convention again so we'll see how that goes. Have you had a chance to check it out yet?

    I hope all is well. Any book "must reads" for me? Off to enjoy my three-day weekend.

    Hey Lisa,

    How goes it?

    Decent here. Last week with the students until break. It was an amazing year and it is going to be tough saying goodbye.

    Heading back to the Dominican Republic this summer for the "Friends Beyond Borders" trip. I cannot wait!!!

    My 3rd book was recently released, "Roam Italy: A Teacher and His Students Take the Ultimate Class Trip." Just thought I would mention it if you were interested.

    What does it take to win a Gastoni?
    Well, for starters, you better write a book on a topic I love. Next, your writing style has to be exquisite (to the point of awe and envy). Finally, your story telling has to be transporting. To sum it up, I quote Somerset:

    “When I read a book I seem to read it with my eyes only, but now and then I come across a passage, perhaps only a phrase, which has a meaning for me, and it becomes part of me.”

    On a more personal note, the time I spent reading and listening to books this year was pure escapism. It felt like I spent most of it in a hospital waiting room (which is not true). When I’d start obsessing about my girl Gracie’s cancer I’d crack a book and ride it hard to block the worst of my fears. At night, when I needed to find a path to sleep, I’d take the easy road and escape down a story line. A good book is a gift.

    Our family has so much to be thankful for this year. For starters, Carrie and I have our girl back! She now has about an inch of fine blond hair sticking straight out of her 5 year old head. At school they call her Q-tip. Her teachers call her Q-T-tip. I’ll post a couple holiday pictures of the family up on her website: caringbridge.org/visit/gracegaston

    Tiz the Season. I imagine, like me, you give books. My holiday list keeps getting longer and my holiday budget keeps getting smaller. What's a guy to do? Answer: Ask his stellar and sturdy Shelfarians where they place their orders. I order the majority of my books (for my own consumption) via Amazon Used... but I'm not going to gift a used book (tacky, tacky). So, have you found a place that would offer a deep discount for a volume buy? I'd appreciate you passing on the tip. Thanks, Merry Merry, Dave

    The trip to the DR was incredible. I just got one of my photos from the trip enlarged and framed and I cannot take my eyes off it. I cannot stop thinking about the experience each day and the fact that so much beauty can be found in some of the most downtrodden places on earth.

    How are things?

    I am doing well. Just got back from a month in South Carolina and I leave tomorrow for a "social justice tour" of the Dominican Republic.

    I totally agree with you about today's lack of female role models. On a side note, during the first week of each school year I share with my 8th grade students that I am a feminist. I am sure you can imagine what sort of answers they give me when I ask if they know what that means.

    Oh, thanks for the tip on the Percy books. They sound familiar but I have never picked any of them up. Hopefully before school begins on September 3rd I will be able to give it a go.

    If you like mysterious/fantastic you should read The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak it's categorized as YA but it's really ageless. It's hard to categorize but I'd call it historical fiction with a twist.
