I am an admitted bookoholic and a confirmed pusher. None of my friends leave my house without a book in hand. I am normally very good at matching books to people. However, my wide range has become a problem for it is difficult for my friends to recommend books to me. I am now recording all the books I read this year under the tag 2009. ... more »

Hey there, just thought I'd let you know that I reviewed Anya's Ghost as well. Can't say that I enjoyed it too much, but I can why someone else would. Anyway, I'm looking for interesting people on this website, and you seem like one of them. If you ever want to chat books, give me a holler. Seems to me that you might have a more expansive book taste than me, but eh..maybe we can learn from other.

Hello there, I see you are currently reading "Sandman Slim", I keep meaning to pick this up but my bookstores only ever seems to have the "To Kill the Dead". I've had mixed reviews from people about this book and would love to know what you thought/are thinking. Also, I see you've just finished "The God Engines". I really enjoyed that book, but have heard Scalzi's other books are unlike it. I was curious if you had any suggestions for books similar to it? Thanks so much :D

Hi Smog ---- I think we would be good friends because you plan to read many of the books that either I have read or like you plan to read. I think we could have some good discussions about them, too. I see you are reading "The troubled Man" by Henning Mankell. I loved the book and I think the author is great. I've read every one of his Kurt Wallender books and I'm sorry this will be the last. ---- Frances L

Smog, here's a jewel: "Tales of the Dying Earth" by Jack Vance is perhaps the quintessential collection of sci/fi fantasy/adventure stories ever written by one of the most revered and awarded authors to write in this genre. The words that come to mind when trying to describe his incredible achievement are: wondrous, magnificent, epic, spellbinding, dazzling, exquisite, inventive, wordsmithery, magical, elegant, enthralling, engrossing, imaginative, original, mellifluous pacing, atmospheric backdrops, transformational, fantastical storylines! I read the first story in this collection when i was 11 years old and the others in the ensuing years. Over the years I have read the collection over 20 times, each time reflecting on the joy it brings me and its life changing impact on my reading addiction. Just imagine being able to transform written words from your minds eye into life-like visions and you will then understand the sensual impact of Jack Vance's brilliance! Ironically, because of its unique qualities I have always been protective and therefore reluctant to expose this truly fabulous literary experience to others for fear of diminishing its value to me...a misguided supposition I know, but true never-the-less. So, if you want to share my journey into the unknown and wander through the beautiful worlds as penned by a master scribe then you will read this incredible collection of stories and revel in their beatific perfection. Storytelling at its best; a masterpiece...

I've heard good things about Sandman Slim. I'd be interested to know what you think of it when you're done. It's on my PBS wishlist because it sounded interesting.

I was wasting time on Shelfari (again) and noticed that you have read the Angel: After The Fall graphic novels! I am currently halfway through season 2 of Angel (and just finished S5 of Buffy) and am so in love with it that I already ordered After The Fall and it's waiting for me on my shelf :)

For some reason, I never watched Buffy or Angel when they were actually on TV and I was an appropriate age to be obsessed with them, so now I am in my late twenties and watching 4-6 episodes at a time because I just can't get enough!

When I finish them all, we'll have to compare notes :)

Smog hi, I've come across a story that is so exeptional I had to write you about it. It's titled "Nathan's Run" by John Gilstrap and I think you will find it as moving and inspiring as I did. While a fictional account it is an emotional coming-of-age journey that will pull at your heartstrings and give you pause to think about the power of the human spirit. Enjoy and READ ON...

Guess I'm just old school. Do you have any suggestions for new sf that a guy like me is likely to enjoy? Love sf of the old space cowboy pulp fiction variety. I'm not PC -- I like stuff that is thoughtfully crafted and reflects a mind informed by the riches of the Western Tradition.
