Author and journalist (Los Angeles Times staff writer). Blood Passion: The Ludlow Massacre and Class War in the American West (Rutgers) is my first book. It explores the 1913-14 coal strike in Southern Colorado that dissolved into guerrilla warfare between mostly immigrant miners and the Colorado National Guard. At least 75 people were killed in...more »

    Hi Scott,
I am reading Blood Passion now. I am not finished yet, but I already think you've added a lot to the story. I've read most of what there is on Ludlow, to the extent I almost dread picking up another book on it, so that's saying something. You had a lot of background there I didn't know. You've researched it very thoroughly--I'm spending as much time on the endnotes as the narrative. Really a nice job.

I too recommend "Dread Road." It's a narrative that takes place during a women's trip through Ludlow. I have a copy somewhere of "Dread Road" performed for radio--very compelling.

Yes, but not as a historical. The massacre a sort of background to a modern-day bus trip. If you search on it there are some online articles that go into more detail about Le Sueur, and "Dread Road." I've been meaning to revisit it to see if it makes anymore sense.

"Blood Passion" has been on my list since it came out. I snagged "Trembling in the Bones" off your shelf. Thanks for the David Mason ref. I missed that one. I don't know if you've come across it in your research but you might be interested in Meridel Le Sueur's "The Dread Road."

Moved to Colorado from New Orleans where I spent my first year of college. I am heading up to Casper for a conference and intend on bringing your book for those down times. I'm intrigued by what I've read about it. I'll let you know what I think.

Thanks for the add. Look forward to reading your book. I have been interested in Ludlow since moving to Colorado in 1981. Was fortunate enough to be at the rededication of the monument a few years back.

I'm looking forward to reading your book. I've always been intrigued by Ludlow -- especially since I live in CO. Heard about your book on CO public radio.

Hi, That's an interesting project that should keep you busy for a while... Especially when you have a full time job !
How much time do you think it will take you to complete it ? You seem that have done quite a bit of research already. Let me know how it goes ? What are you reading these days ? Claire
