    You want woman-based stories?May I tell you a little about bang BANG? It's a novel about a Center City Philadelphia woman who gets really upset with all the guns on the streets and does something outrageous to make things better. Here's a review:

    *STAR* BookList (published by the American Library Association)
    . . . her close friend is shot in the street, . . . . Interviewed by a reporter at the scene, Paula later discovers that her grief-stricken words, taken out of context, are being used by a shady senator and the gun industry to promote the pro-firearm agenda. Suddenly finding herself the unwitting—and very public—proponent of a political stance she abhors, Paula embarks on a decidedly offbeat, one-woman vigilante crusade to bring the gun trade to its knees . . . the book is filled with anger and raw urgency. The characters are tough and believable, and the dialogue positively sings. In many ways it’s the literary equivalent of a Tarantino movie: edgy, streetwise, and a little arrogant (don’t expect a balanced look at the subject of gun control), with a strong and determined female protagonist. Brilliant might be too big a word for this novel but not by much.

    I love Charles Dickens also. I'm reading The Annotated Pride and Prejudice, taking me a while with all the explainations. I'm also reading Hood by Stephen Lawhead.

    Have you tried George Eliot? If not, I'd recommend starting with Silas Marner, then The Mill on the Floss, and progress to Adam Bede and perhaps Daniel Deronda before tackling her masterpiece, Middlemarch. :)

    If you're in a P&P phase, you might like "Me & Mr. Darcy" - I just read it last week. It's fun - a woman from NY goes on a trip to the UK specifically for those who "love" Mr. Darcy and Austen. It's not too highbrow, but it's cute. :-)

    Dear schoolmom, thanks for the request. I love the photo, looks like love to me. I have been going through an Austenphase for about 30 years now with no end in sight. Luckily there are some really gifted writers who have written spin-offs on just about all of her works so I can indulge myself. Midwifery- I bet you could write some stories too.

    Wow, a former midwife. I've had four of 'em. Five out of six kids homeborn! Pleased to have you as a friend. Read "A Midwife's Story" by Penny Armstrong if you get the chance--assuming it's still in print. Don't tell anybody, but I wasn't impressed with "Life of Pi" either. I only liked the inventory of the boat's contents.
