I am never not reading at least 2 books! I read whenever and whereever I can. The reviews I post are strictly for my own use--so I can keep track of what I liked and didn't like about the books I read. I am in no way a literary critic and my opinions reflect that, for sure. Happy Reading!

  • The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
    • Rated 4 stars

This is one of those books that I wanted to read, I enjoyed it while I was reading it, but I was a bit relieved when I finished it. Highly controversial and emotionally charged. This book was very, very well written and I really admire the author for the amount of time and research she put into it. Parts of it read like a novel, other parts were a little technical, but the attention to detail was great.

    Hallelujah: A Novel

This was a brilliant story and would make a great movie. The characters were well developed. A couple of caveats though... one, it took me a LONG time to get through this book. The writing style is very descriptive, sometimes to the point of dragging things on. Also, in almost every chapter the story jumps to a different character, so some people will find that annoying. Overall, I would recommend this one. I enjoyed reading it over the holidays and have to admit, when I had finished reading about the Hallelujah Chorus I had to look it up on youtube and listen/watch a few times. Still gives me chills. I liked that some of the characters were real historical figures and that the author had taken the time to research the actual circumstances of Handel's life.

This would be 3.5 stars for me. I thought it was well written and had a good flow, despite switching from past to present with each chapter. I often found myself very frustrated with the main character's behavior and I didn't think the author always kept her authentic to her age. It is a multi-layered story that will keep you guessing and will introduce you to a world of flowers and plants without being overly technical or boring in those parts. It was actually very interesting!

Gorgeous pictures throughout, but not as helpful with decorating ideas as I had hoped--much of it wasn't practical for me and my budget.

Love the author's writing style--she is an excellent story teller. This is a somewhat dark tale in colonial Massachusetts based on her family history. While I didn't like it quite as much as The Heretic's Daughter, that is mainly because this just tells a much harsher story. My rating is based entirely upon that, not as a reflection on the quality of the writing. I would recommend this to anyone who loves historical fiction.

Well done. Once I got into the story I wanted to read every chance I got. The main character, Yelena, is a strong heroine and I enjoyed reading about her. The fantasy/magic element was believable and not to "out there." Already started the next in the series.

Interesting little book that helps you pick gifts based on a person's personality style and how well you know them. Proved helpful in picking an anniversary gift for my husband!

  • Angels in the ER: Inspiring True Stories from an Emergency Room Doctor
    • Rated 4 stars

Overall an enjoyable book to pick up and put down as needed. As an RN whose first love is the ER, I could relate to the circumstances and it made me think of people who I met while working that could be considered angels. I hope I was one! I'm generously giving it 4 stars, not that there was any reason I didn't like it, it was fine, just not the compelling read that would make me bump it higher.

A book that is both a great story and a thought-provoking work. This is the second book I've read by this author and she is becoming a favorite. I have so many passages highlighted because they are so eloquently stated yet so real. I finished it at 2 am and have been pondering ever since... what would Kate give me to do? Can't wait to discuss this at book group!

Entertaining, light... a little heavier on the religion than I remember the first two in the series being. Overall, I enjoyed it but was a little disappointed in the finale of the series.
