Read or watch tv? Read. Read or sleep? Read first, then sleep. Read in the tub, read in bed, read in the car, read in the waiting room, read in the pool, read at the kitchen table. Read a variety: mostly fiction--especially if it is clean. Historical fiction, Christian fiction, YA fiction, memoirs, horse related books. Scriptures,... more »

Plan to Read Reading Now I've Read

Public Notes

It's on my wishlist, actually. I think I don't use the shelves the way most people do, because I use the wishlist for books that I want to read. I use the plan on reading shelf for books that I have sitting here waiting for me to read. That pile is getting out of hand, but so is my wishlist! The "I'm reading now" is a list of what I am literally reading at this time. (I read lots of books at the same time.)

Anyway, I really want to read Sarah's Key because I love books about WWII and I love France (served my mission there). So I really really hope it isn't explicit!! I haven't read anything like that, but that might not mean anything.

I love the Katie Chandler series!! I've read all 4 books. I went to her website and found out that she would like to publish a 5th book, but sales dropped off with each installment, so unless she sells more they won't publish the next one. Or something like that. I signed up for her newsletter--it's full of good writing tips.

While I didn't end up reading "Enchantment" in NYC I did read it last week and really enjoyed it. Thanks for the recommendation (via your shelf). I look forward to future reviews from you.

    HI sixpalz,
I noticed you have read orson Scott card's "Enchanted". That is on my list to read and I was wondering if you think it would be a good book for traveling. I am heading to NYC next week and need a good read for the plane, subway etc. I need something that will hold my attention from the get go, yet not require total concentration. THanks!

I haven't read it. It's on my wishlist. All I know about it is that Target has it as one of its Bookmarked books. If you do read it, let me know what you think!

great ideas! i will have to use that. maybe for rs we could concentrate on the classics since we all like reading those and i have practically read zero! go figure. we never read them in high school, don't know why. and then we could do whatever in the other one. i can't complain about the enrichment it's only been 2 years and this is the longest stint in rs that i have done EVER! all my life, college, pre-mission, post-mission and married life i have bounced between yw and primary with a short 6 mo period in rs (in enrichment!). so i am glad to be in rs, but i am getting low on ideas for activities and frankly we don't have too many people to ask to do the small enrichments that we do every month. everyone is busy with their primary callings and family! but since i have a new counselor to work with maybe she will have some good fresh ideas! thanks for yours! definately going to give it a go. now to find the time!

thanks anyway. wow! pg13 huh? that one doesn't seem like it would be pg13 for reasons that some of them are but who knows. we just had our rs presidency changed around and i thought maybe i would be released but alas i am still there and feel obligated to keep up the book club as an enrichment activity since i am the enrichment leader. but once i am released one of these days i will definately take the book club awol with me! ha!! i have been thinking of doing a separate one on the side but trying to find the time to do that one! we'll see. how do you get people to come out to your book club? do you invite at church? do you limit the number of people? i would love to hear your suggestions as i may do it after the new year. thanks again.

hi sixpalz! i was wondering if you have read "the secret life of bees" and if so if you think it would be appropriate for an lds book club. since it is an enrichment activity we have to be careful in what we can read. we are getting ready to pick our books for next year and your input would be much appreciated. thanks!

About The Dead and the Gone...
the only connection to it is the catastrophe. This can certainly be read as a stand-alone, and after booktalking it, the guys put this at the top of their list to read and/or book that interested them the most. Go for it...your son will LOVE it!

I accidentally sent a YES on World War Z. It should really be a maybe. I don't really remember any sex, although it definitely has violence. (It IS about killing zombies). The reason a MAYBE is that this book is only perhaps 25% "zombie action" but the true MEAT of the story is probably social and political commentary. Without being OVERT commentary.

He should enjoy it, but you would actually enjoy it as well... especially the pointed commentary on how poorly the world will respond in a crisis.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan was a good discussion for our book club, and I believe everyone liked it. Some other good ones from our book club last year: A Girl Named Zippy, Wish You Well, Reading Lolita in Tehran, The Quilter's Apprentice, Memory Keepers Daughter, the Year of Magical Thinking, and Spilling Clarence.

What have you done that has worked well?

Thank you for answering my question.

Anne Rice books are great, they pull you in and keep you stuck on the book.

We actually read it for our book club! We discussed it last night. There was a lot to talk about, but there is one part of the book that was offensive to a few members of the group. It wasn't very explicit, but enough to be uncomfortable. It didn't fit well with the time period, we thought. And that's kind of what I was referring to in my review--somehow her freedom was tied up with immorality. The way the book reads you get the feeling that she would never have stood up for herself if she hadn't fallen into sin. The book group's opinion was that it was fun to read but nobody thought it had a good message.

I am so happy to hear that there are a couple options to help my book budget, especially since my husband tells me I cannot buy anymore books until I've read some of them that I have on my shelf, and technically those sites are not places I buy books. No, I haven't read any of those books, I will put them on my list of books to get. Hayley and I read the Warriors series by Erin Hunter and I am trying to get her into Twilight and Clique series. We will have to see how that goes,

I agree with you about Jacob and now Bella can have the love of her life and her best friend and not feel like she has to choose.

What are you reading now?? I started the Clique series and it is kind of cute, I plan on sharing that with my niece, especially since she has me reading her Warriors books. I will let you know of any other books like that as I come across them - unless of course I see them already on your shelf.

I found a great site for trading books. It is www.paperbackswap.com and you have to list 10 books, you get 2 free and you can trade books with people all over all you have to pay is shipping. This has been a lifesaver for my book budget and I thought maybe with you and your daughter being avid readers this may help you out as well.

Well I guess I will catch you later, happy reading.

I hate finding unwanted "stuff" too. That is why I read a lot of old books and YA fiction mixed in with modern authors.
