I was always an avid reader. I barely recall not being able to read. I could read before I began kindergarten and, when I was seven years old, my teacher wrote a note on my report card that I should be prevented from reading so much. My mother questioned the woman's sanity. My parents' house was full of books. I was never told I could not read anything on the shelves. When I was eight, I persuaded the people at the main public library to permit me to check out books from the section where the adults and teenagers were allowed and children were not allowed.
In high school I skipped school at least a half dozen times to go to the library. In college I majored in English and concentrated on English literature and minored in history.
The truth is, whenever I was not busy with some other activity I devoured books and read books on anything which caught my interest. If I had not been able to read so much so quickly, I probably would not have had much of a social life. Music is actually the only other thing which has ever held that much of my attention.
