If I could give this 10 stars out of 5, I would. This is some of the best golden age science fiction ever written. Alan Dean Foster has referred to Eric Frank Russell as an inspirational influence. Russell's stories are filled with wry humor and are at times mildly cynical, but they always have the same positive, forward-looking attitude that so characterized the golden age works.

"It was a joy to burn." These 6 opening words form one of the most famous and well-recognized phrases in all of fiction. This is a must-read for anyone at all concerned with civil liberties and associated social issues. The ultimate irony is that this book is often one that is burned or banned from libraries for "offensive" content.

Yet another defining book of the science fiction genre. This novel started out as a poignant short story. Orson Scott Card beat the odds by taking that story and expanding it into a novel that is as good as and maybe even better. I originally read it as a young male teenager and it most definitely will appeal to that demographic. For my money, this book is worth more than all the other follow-on books in the series by a long shot.

This is one of the defining classic golden age science fiction novels. It is an essential for any serious fan of the science fiction genre. Once you have read this book, you begin to see echoes of its influence scattered over so many other works that you wonder how you never heard of it before. This book is widely recognized as not just good science fiction but very good writing with some of the best prose to ever grace the genre. If I could rate higher than five stars, I would.
