    Not A Keeper Anymore

In this follow up to “He’s A Keeper” we pick with Toni and her kids, who have moved from Oakland to Ohio. Toni is trying hard to get over the demise of her abusive marriage and adjust to life in Ohio. The kids are struggling being the new kids on the block. Eric is feeling the loss of his family so much, he just goes deeper in a rut, and he is still the man we love to hate. Eric is trying hard to win back Toni, but she just cannot get over the pain he has inflicted on her and their children.

This story kept me entertained with the day-to-day life of the characters. Toni, trying to adjust to life, has some funny situations and some trying ones. Amiya and Junior hate Ohio. They’re teenagers and get into some situations that will have you wanting to wring their necks. Amiya the oldest has a different out look on life, while Junior misses his dad.

Author Leila Jefferson does a good job painting the pictures. “Scorned Hearts is easy enough to keep up with. There are twists and turns along with things that were predictable, thankfully not many things were predictable. Overall, I enjoyed this novel and look forward to see what she comes up with next. If you read “He’s a Keeper” I recommend the follow up, you wont be disappointed.

    Love and Happiness

With this superb debut, Mr. Barnes shows the poise of a seasoned author with no sign of this being his first book. The character development was great. The interacting between the characters was great. There were also subtle clues left to pique the thought that there may be a sequel, but if the book is left as a stand alone you will be satisfied with just the one.

Rick Jenkins is wondering do nice guys always finish last. Rick is a successful, handsome, educated, and has money to boot - in other words every woman dream man. Why does he have such a hard time finding true love? Rick is well diverse and all his boys are successful. His boys: Smooth, Roy and Terry were a necessary factor to the story as they kept it flowing. They also had a brother-hood that is not often shown in today’s society. When the boys go to an AKA charity event, Rick sees her (Aphrodite) the woman of his dreams and the chase is on. Rick is stung with the love bug at first sight.

Aphrodite Morrison (Afro) is a headstrong woman. She is partner in a top advertising company in Atlanta. Afro is a self-proclaimed made woman who does not want for anything. Afro can provide for herself and does not look for a man to make her happy. After she meets Rick and he breaks down those barriers she has built we are in for a love affair like no other that has Afro asking, “What is this love thing all about?” Afro has things in her past that make her damage goods. As we follow along with the story things are revealed that will make you say “Can this couple survive the dark side of things?”

As I flip through the pages of this must read book I was trying to see what direction this was going in and Mr. Barnes kept me on my toes. Rick was such a gentleman I want him gift wrapped and sent to my house. When I closed this book after the last page, I still wanted more. Great job Mr. Barnes, I eagerly await to see what you have for us readers next.

    Kings of 295 Run This

This novel was a great read with very few drawbacks. The biggest problem I had with this novel was the poor editing, which was surprising. This was not something I was expecting. Aside from the editing, I have to say this is author T Styles’ best work to date and she has grown as a writer. With the alternating character chapters, it is not hard to follow the story. When all the characters are introduced, the story picks up and Ms. Styles does a great job with the character devolvement. The only other draw back I had was that some character seems to get lost in the bunch. Although she does bring them back in the end and ties up all loose ends, while reading I was left to wonder what their purpose was.

Crayland Bailor is from W. Baltimore, MD and Nyzon Peate is from Washington, D.C. we follow these two young men from the age of twelve to adult hood. As they get older, we learn the reasons behind them getting in the “game” and becoming two of the most feared and rich men from MD to DC as they are the partners is a gang called Kings of 295. What makes this so remarkable is they find a way to become partners after being enemies due to the cities hating each other. When Cray falls in love Tiara Cartier he has her under his spell. All is good until Nyzon meets her and fall in love with her also. Usually men live by the code money over b*tches. Tiara is no ordinary woman she is the most beautiful either of the men have seen. Once the two realize they in love with the same woman it becomes friend against foe and their crew is forced to decided who to run with, thus the drama is kicked up a couple of notches.

You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife

Bobbi Williams is a con man who temporary loses his mind when his twin sister is murdered. Revenge becomes the name of the game. Lucky for Bobbi he gets a string of robbery cases and not a murder charge, which lands him a six-year bid. While he is revenge driven, Bobbi is befriended by his sister’s boyfriend James. James holds Bobbi down while he does his bid and even has a job for him when he comes home. James runs a successful music company and owns some property which Bobbi helps him run. Together they have success, money and good looks. James has recovered from the loss of his girlfriend and has found love again with Jennifer who becomes his fiancé. Against the code, Bobbi begins a secret love affair with her. Nothing done in dark can stay hidden forever.

The things that are done to keep this affair private make for an interesting plot. The unexpected happens, secrets are revealed that affect more then just Bobbi and James. Life will never be the same for these two men’s families. Mr. McGrew deals with some tough topics cheating, un-protected sex, trust, revenge, and karma. The ending will make you say wow karma really is a b***h. I am happy to read a book that has some tough lessons kudos to you Mr. McGrew for including them in your book. I look forward to seeing where your pen will lead to next.

    Breaking Down Barriers

Wow, this novel had me going through all kinds of emotions and questioning myself on my thought process. This book deals with several taboo subjects such as interracial relationships, domestic violence, and mental illness. It all plays well in this story line, nothing is out of place nor over kill. Author Elissa Gabrielle has made a fan of me. I await her next novel on pins and needles. I was left with one question for the author - Can she gift wrap me a Quincy and send him my way?

We follow Queen Thomas, a young attorney whose main objective is to right the wrongs of her clients all of whom happen to be African American. She lives by the notion that African American men have it the worst in the judicial system. While her personal life is in shambles Queen is a victim of domestic violence at the hand of her ex boyfriend who can’t fathom the idea that Queen wants to end the relationship.

Dr Quincy Hughes a successful, handsome man any woman would be proud to have on her arm and if I dare say in her bed. Quincy is the object of many women’s dreams he has grown tired of the dead-end relationships. Quincy wants a lasting relationship with a woman he can make his wife and have children with. When fate comes his way and he meets Queen he will stop at nothing to get her. What is the problem you ask? Quincy is of the wrong race.

With Queen being so pro African American, can Quincy win her heart over? Will her ex-boyfriend give her up? Find out these answers and more when you read, “Whisper to a Scream.” The poetry in the book is outstanding. If you have not read anything by Elissa Gabrielle, you are truly missing out!

    Corruption

I was not feeling this story for the first couple of chapters. I put it down for a while and came back later. This novel did make a come back. I was glad I kept up with it although I am still a little confused on a few issues. There are many characters and while all were relevant to the story it made it puzzling to keep up with all of them.

Most of the story takes place in San Dora, a prison that is as most of us imagine cliquish. If you are not down, you’re an outsider. With drugs, sex, corruption running wild in the prison system. We follow the everyday dealings of the drug ring. Mia and Jazz are correction officers and they run the show behind the prison walls with the “Gods” holding them down - Akbar, Malik and Born Freedom. Mia’s brother Escalade and his right hand man DB( Do-Boy) are holding everything down in the streets. When all the characters are brought in and the story starts to flow and I am getting picture clearly the twist comes in and the drama begins. This is where I am lost because I now realize the characters I thought I knew - I didn’t know them at all. I was left to go back and double check things and still be left feeling as if I did not know some of them, while others I knew and understood.

There were questions lingering about some of the main characters sexuality. A lot of the story seems very unrealistic. All in all a decent read. I think this author has potential to become a great story teller if he tightens up his storylines and is more consistent in relaying the turn of events.

    An Unbreakable Bond

This story was cute. I believe this book is geared for the teenager or young adult; I think that age group can benefit from this and the lessons for them are worthy of their time. These characters are faced with problems that a lot of our teenagers and young ones are dealing with. I feel our younger generation will relate on some level to this book and may learn from the headaches these young women are faced with. Their bond is unbreakable and a true testament for friendship.

Tabitha William is a nineteen year old teenage mother dealing with an abusive mate. Tabitha’s self esteem is so low she does not think she can overcome it. While she knows this no good for her, she cannot find the courage to leave.

Shanice Thomas the baby of the bunch at the tender age of fourteen. Shanice is the wildest of the bunch. While she has a loving mother at home, Shanice has trouble understand that loving the lord above does not mean her mother does not love her. Feeling unloved, she acts out in the only way she knows how - to sleep around. Shanice is going to learn the hard way.

Lisa Perkins is seventeen and the most responsible of the trio. Lisa’s demons have her on an emotional roller coaster, with Lisa feeling like she cannot turn to her friends for an ear to listen. This young woman has been through hell and has survived. Without an outlet, she does not feel like a survivor, she feels like a little kid trapped in a woman’s body.

We read along as these young woman make choices that they have no idea are going to follow them for the rest of their lives. I wanted to choke these ladies at times, had to keep remembering their age as impressionable young teenagers. While their struggles seem unreal, I know that their struggles are real life problems that I wish our youth did not have to deal with. Mrs. Simmons does a great job of explaining how their situations arose and tackling difficult story lines. The story is quick and easy to follow. While the ending seemed like a stretch, and farfetched it worked with the story. I was grateful it was not your perfect fairytale ending it was definitely a twist I could not predict.

    Heterosexual and Homosexual Worlds Collide

I enjoyed reading this novel as the sexual worlds collide and co exist with each other showing that while sexual preferences are different, we all experience the same feelings and reactions. I believe Mr. Emerson does a good job at portraying the feelings and emotions of his main characters JP, a straight woman and Donte, a homosexual male.

Jennifer Peale better known as JP is a woman who is dealing with her past. The fact her mother died when she was at the age of 18 has shaped her adult ways. This tragic event has left JP with emotional issues. It has also has caused JP to change her career path and has effected how she deals with personal relationships. JP’s first day of law school she meets Donte Erickson and their friendship sprouts as we learn they have more in common than meets the eyes.

Donte Erickson is struggling with his sexuality, dealing with issues of his mother death and the fact that he has never met his father. Donte also has unresolved issues with his mother’s history. His dream of becoming a lawyer has come to reality when he is accepted into Georgetown University.

When JP and Donte meet, we follow them as they deal with some of the same issues. As best friends, we see them deal with their life as told by them. They are the same but yet total opposite. This works well with the story.

    Teflon a true rider

J.M. Benjamin has achieved what so many have not. What is that you may ask? A successful follow up “Ride or Die Chick 2” that is better than its predecessor. It takes a writer with excellent skills to pull of a follow-up when the main character from the original novel (Treach) is deceased and not take the story in a different direction then the first book. I felt Treach’s presence throughout this book through the memoirs of his long time girlfriend Teflon Jackson.

We meet Teflon again. This time she is in the hospital and has to come to the realization that her beloved Treach is no longer with her walking among the living. Teflon is put on trial for crimes Treach and she have committed. During her trial at she has been found guilty, she goes into labor and delivers a healthy baby boy which she names after his father. After the birth of her son; which the state promptly took custody off, she starts to receive letters from her “father in law” Richard Robinson BKA Richie Gunz. These letters keep her sane, and she starts the healing process by writing her memoirs.

When Richie Gunz time is up for parole after nearly three decades, he does everything in his power to get Teflon released from prison and low and behold, he is successful. Now they on a mission to get Treach Jr. back. Now we see why Teflon is a true rider and always will be. Nothing will stand in their way of regaining custody of her son. Follow along with the difficulties of trying to regain custody, from a system that is not so forgiving. The ending will shock you and having you looking for more. I was disappointed this story had to end. I wanted so much more.

Author J.M Benjamin has overwhelmed me with his style of writing. I will continue to be a fan and look forward to what he has in store for us next. Although it will be hard to top this one, I am sure he is up for the challenge and won’t keep his readers waiting too long!

    The Perfect title

Breanna Baker also known as Bree is living in Atlanta Ga. with her boyfriend Charles. We open up with her daydreaming about the events of her dad’s tragic accident that left him dead. This opening chapter explains many of the events to come. Bree is a twin and has ten other siblings. When their dad died, Bree pitch in to help with the family expensive. When she graduated from college, she was offered a management training position thus moving her to Ga. When Bree gets a call from her mother with the bad news that her grandmother has died, Bree has to take a trip home to Charlotte NC. While in NC. Family secrets are reveled causing Bree to look at her life and do some self-elevating. Bree is left with a better understanding of her ways i.e. how she handles stressful situations, her personal and business relationship.

This novel is filled with disappointment, unconditional love, heartbreak, secrets, and faith. All is explained about those secrets that had me thinking what I would have done had this been my family. How does one get past these situations? I was extremely impressed with the way this novel plays out. No stone was left unturned. We cannot choose our family that is a fact, but we love them all the same (hopefully). The hidden meaning of the title will be missed by many I am sure of that.

I felt Ms. Denny passion for writing as I read this novel. I could feel she put her heart into this novel and it showed as I read and could not put this novel down. I just had to get to end of this book to see how it all was going to turn out and I was not disappointed one bit. I am looking forward to reading more from this talented author.
