I'm an avid reader and writer currently back in school full time working on a doctorate in psychology through a distance program. Although my current pleasure reading is limited to audiobooks that I can listen to in the car and while plodding away on the treadmill, I love fiction and memoirs, especially women's memoirs. I'm also interested in... more »

Hi scribo! Actually the woman I wrote about is from Webster Groves, MO! The book doesn't come out til the spring, but there's already some info on Amazon. I love reading about women's life stories too. Have you read Judith Thurman's biographies? You might like them. Happy Thanksgiving!

I tried to add a book to the Group Shelf, and it doesn't seem to be working. The book is Confessions of a Pagan Nun, by Kate Horsley.

I meant to say that each Tacoma neighborhood has character, not characters. Apologies to Tacoma-ites if I've offended.

Thanks for the note. When I was growing up the joke was that Tacoma was a place where they kept Velveeta in the gourmet section. There was also the "aroma from Tacoma" due to the pulp mill - that has since closed. That was then, this is now. Tacoma is a vibrant, interesting place. Like Seattle, a city of neighborhoods, each with its own characters. Closer to Mt. Rainier and close enough to enjoy what Seattle has go offer. A colleague/friend is the CEO of SoundTransit which is building the commuter rail system. She trains from Tacoma to Seattle every day to work. I don't follow real estate much - although we still own a condo in Seattle - but I imagine Tacoma is cheaper.

My good friend Sophia got her PhD in Psychology a couple of years ago. She's now Dr. Sophia! She took classes in testing and needed subjects, so I took all sorts of tests. She's now back in private practice in California. I miss her in Kona, but we'll see her in July when we show up on her doorstep to go wine tasting in Napa.

    hi!
    thanks for your note, Mary.
i have been trying to lay my hands on the gilligan book ever since i read about it in a gender theory overview.it says it has been criticised for essentialism.that is a rather interesting issue. one sees it very prominently reflected in that brilliant short story [[yellow wallpaper]] by charlotte perkins gilman.
do let me know what you think of gilman and the criticism against gilligan, being a student of psychologist yourself.

    bye!

    Greetings scribo,
I am enlisting the help of my friends. I would like Shelfari to make it possible for us to tag our books on our Reading List as we do those on our Shelf. I use this list to record books I own but haven't yet read. Tagging would prevent the purchase of a duplicate book and allow us to view, at a glance, the books we have on that list. If you think this is a good idea, would you, please, send Shelfari the suggestion? If enough of us ask, perhaps they will make this possible.

Mary, I replied to your comment on To Kill a Mockingbird on your shelf. :-) I like your tag "bad bad bad." It's good that you don't have a tag "good good good" or I'd have to add more books to my ever growing wish list. I love Shelfari, but it has caused me to be overwhelmed with the number of books that I'd like to read! Well, I'd better close now so I can do just that! Read! Oh, one more thing first, perhaps you'd like to join a group that I started called Sharing a Personal Book Experience. You might even like to add something.

    Greetings scribo,
I see you read Jane Eyre. I love that book. Charlotte and her sister Emily disagreed over the potential success of a romantic novel with a "plain" heroine. Emily said only a "beautiful" heroine could prove a book successful. Charlotte struck out to prove her sister wrong. Aren't we glad she did! I saw two different films of this novel, one better than the other, unfortunately I can't remember which was which! I think it was the older version. What are you reading now? I am reading several books about the Native Americans. Right now I'm reading Gateway to Empire, the 5th in a series of 6 books entitled The Winning of America by Allan W. Eckert. He is a phenomenal writer of historical non-fiction. His books flow as smoothly as good fiction with the benefit of very detailed annotated notes.

    Hi scribo,
Definately....we must get acquainted! Are you referring to the book A Year by the Sea? That is a wonderful book about a woman who chooses to spend a year alone to regroup and later join her husband. I admired her because I had taken a two year sabbatical from my own marriage. My husband and I were were very much on amicable terms but I needed some space and it worked out quite well.
