“Well it's a well-written book for sure, and a fairly unique story line. Unique in its details, but not so unique in the overall theme of the story: The story of a post-apocalyptic, heavily-controlled, dystopian, communism-inspired society. For sure there are unique details, and 1984 is probably more depressing and heart-wrenching than most types of stories like this, but I just didn't like it. I suppose one reason could be because I've been reading too many stories like this, and it's starting to drag me down. But I believe the main reason is because there is not a sign of anything good coming out in the end. I prefer it when stories at least have an inkling of a happy ending. This has nothing like that in the ending, and the good, happy parts the main character goes through in the story are short-lived; brought down by the "thought police" and his own thoughts themselves. And I also disliked how there is such a bleak view of humanity's future, like in the story there is no hope for real humanity to come back again. I really don't like it. I guess it's supposed to be this way to make it more like reality, but not all of reality has unpleasant endings.
I guess I'm mostly sick of authors putting out huge warnings that all humans can do is destroy themselves. I believe there is a lot more good in life than that. But I also hope we as humans don't let ourselves fall into a such a controlling trap as this. ”
