  • The Journal of Antonio Montoya: A Novel of Love and Belonging

Sometimes I really "get" magic realism books and other times I'm kind of baffled by them. Most of the time I really like them even if I don't totally "get" them. I found The Journal of Antonio Montoya to be a very enjoyable and fast read, but when I closed it at the end, I sat confused for a few moments. It was left wide open to interpretation, and isn't what reading is about anyway--how one relates to or is affected personally by the story?

I was enjoying reading this light, easy, predictable story all the way through only it wasn't quite as predictable as I thought. There is a little twist at the end that I found very refreshing.

I felt a connection to this book because of where it takes place. I "grew up" all over the place, but one of the places I spent a lot of time was in a small community in Southern Colorado not far from Taos with the same lifestyle. It was very familiar to read this book--a nostalgic homey feeling. I think I would have liked this book either way, though. I really liked Sunny and I also really liked Gwen. I thought the ending was fantastic because, although I do enjoy fairy tale happy endings, I also enjoy open endings because that's how life is. We don't have just one story to tell, but rather hundreds of stories that can't be summarized in one book. I absolutely look forward to other books by Judith Ryan Hendricks.

These books are great fun to listen to while I'm knitting or cleaning or running. I like Stephanie Plum more with every book and I'm glad I decided to start this series for just fun and nothing more.

Another good book to listen to while knitting, cleaning and running. The Blossom Street books are very predictable but that doesn't make them less entertaining. I read the first two in this series, but listened to this one on audiobook and I think I liked it better on audio...don't know why.

I really love Sarah Addison Allen's books! They are whimsical, magical and fairy tale-ish but not in a corny, predictable way. I get whisked away, caught up and totally absorbed by them. They are relatively short but not lacking in any way. This is the epitome of escaping into a story.

The Stephanie Plum books are pretty silly and fun--perfect to listen to on audiobook while I knit and run. They are a guilty pleasure.

  • Seed to Seed: Seed Saving and Growing Techniques for Vegetable Gardeners
    • Rated 5 stars

If you are interested in growing heirloom seeds and then harvesting seeds from your own plants to plant again the next year, this book is the one to help you do that. It's very easy to follow and understand.

I heard really great things about this book, but I was a little bit disappointed. It just didn't have enough information. I felt like I got going and then looked into the book for what to do next and there was no next. I'm having trouble getting the spinning down and hoped this book would help me but it didn't. Judith MacKenzie McCuin is a well-known, highly respected spinner and teacher of spinners, so I think I may have just expected more from this book because of that.

I like some of the patterns, but some are either too involved or difficult, in my opinion, to bother with. I do think the information she provides is useful and I am happy that I bought the book.
