It has been awhile. Are you just rolling your eyes at where out leadership is taking us? I don't know if this news made it to Canada but the new government recommendations are for women to to wait until 50 to begin getting mammograms and then not annually. People are trying to act like this is not connected to the new health care legistlation....PUHLEEZ!

I just finished reading Handle With Care today. I love Picoult. She does such a great job of presenting controversial topics from different angles. I'm looking forward to her next one on Asperger's. I have a nephew with Asperger. The parents are in complete denial. I can't wait to see how Picoult handels this subject.

I also just bought Breakfast at Tiffanys. I see you liked it. Talk to you later.

Ha Ha. I love my AP Lit class, Ms. Clark is sooo funny and there are so many really amusing and fun people. The guys in our class ended up singing Canterbury Tales at the top of their lungs one time it was really funny. Your right about the applications. I was pretty stressed but now that I'm actually starting to apply it isn't that hard really. Yeah I'm applying to Kings out in Halifax which is a branch of Dalhousie (I have no idea how to spell that) but I kinda only want to go there for first year and then come back to UBC for second. I am glad that your mom is getting better, when my mom's friend had cancer it was such a scare but she got through it and there was no real problems. Something like that really brings the family together, which is always good :) Sam if your interested in Law my Grandma has a firm in yaletown that I work in during the summer. They do family law and the main lawyer is totally crazy and insulting but hey it was pretty fun. If you got your Law degree I could probably hook you up there with an intern position, they love super organized people. I thought about writing too, but I just don't have the time or the will power to finish a novel. When I get my self set up somewhere maybe I'll revisit the idea but I think that is more of a side job anyway before you get big it is pretty hard to just write a best seller first time around. Especially if you expect it to be good *cough cough* Twilight. I know small children are so frightening. I'm pretty good with little girls but little boys just scare the hell out of me and I don't want to end up throwing them like I do my brother. Ha, we had the olympic mascots come into the school and it was so funny. Sam have you ever considered getting a job at the library? They are pretty good about time I think and you would be surrounded by books for a large part of the day. Just a thought.

I'm good I'm just really nervous about applying to universities. It is so nerve racking.
I think you made a really good decision coming back here to stay with your mom. I agree sometimes it's hard to tell really what you want to do since there is so much out there to do. I want to learn Japanese too, its the one things I'm sure about when I go to university, I want to learn as many languages as possible. I've seen Rachel a couple of times and talked to her on facebook but I haven't seen or spoken to Alba, that's good that she is doing well. I want to apply to UBC, Mount Allison, and Kings, though I really can't decide between Kings and UBC. What careers are you leaning towards Sam? Are you taking up a job while your here in Van City to save up for first year?

    Greetings CROAH member!

We are now accepting nominations for the next group read to cover the fourth US President, James Madison.

Please send your suggestions via one of 2 ways:

    a) a private note to either Regina or Dog Lover (this method reveals your email address to us), or

    b) use the "Questions About this Group" text box found on the member's tab. This sends an email to both administrators and masks your email address.

Please do NOT post your nomination to the site's discussion tab.

Please include the title, author, and brief description of the book. It would also be nice if you included the Shelfari book page URL.

Nominations will be accepted through the 18th. Nominations will be posted and voting will take place through the 25th. We will post the selected book on the 26th.

Because we are approaching the Holidays a revised schedule will be followed for the remainder of 2009 and beginning of 2010. We will vote for the Madison read in October, post discussion questions in November, skip December, vote on Monroe reads in January, and post discussion questions in February.

A suggestion has been made to continue the extended reading schedule past the Holidays and provide 2 months between book selections. We would be interested in hearing anyone's thoughts on this. Would it help you? Would you lose momentum? Are you too busy to participate on the current schedule.

Please post your comments on this proposed scheduling change to the nomination thread found at http://www.shelfari.com/groups/34700/discussions/146618/James-Madison-Nominations-are-Open

The four books we've chosen since the group started have been fabulous. We look forward to seeing the nominations for the fifth.

    Thanks,

    Regina & DL

I'm working two part times though so there hasn't been a lot of time for reading
I'm toying with reading Dan Brown's Deception Point again and can't decide weather I want to read the last Eragon book.
Have you read it? It's probably not your style :)

Sorry for the delayed response. My daughter got married last weekend and things got hectic!

It is interesting to hear your experience on health care. In America's ever evolving demand to have everything handed to them, most have no idea what the consequences of UHC (Universal Health Care) will be. I have seen Holland's health care system first hand and it frightened me. This was way before there was any discussion of US moving towards UHC. Is our system perfect? By no means, but to completely shift the paradigm simply because you don't like the current system is ridiculous. I always point to the VA (Veterans Administration) system as the closest example most people have seen of a "UHC system". I haven't found anyone who wants to be part of that system. Then, you should hear the litany of items that will need to be taxed in order to pay for it! The one good thing that may come out of it is that I may kick my Doctor Pepper addiction. I have made a vow to swear off soft drinks if they are going to be taxed to pay for it! No since in me paying once through income taxes and then through "sin" tax. No, I am not in the top 5% income bracket, but anyone who thinks they are the only ones that will be taxed simply doesn't understand the magnitude of costs the government will incur, particularly in light of the "bail out" debt. All you have to do is look at the few states that have tried a state UHC program and have stopped or are seeing massive budget defecits. Hawaii had a system and had to shut it down because the people who were paying for individual insurance plans stopped since they could get it "free" through the gvt. Massachussetts is struggling now. AGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like you point on the GM bailout. Have you read Atlas Shrugged? If not you really should. I read it right before the financial "crisis" began. It was staggering to see the parallels in a book that was written in the 1950's.

Take care and talk to you soon.

    Greetings!

There are 3 items on the Chronological Read of American History (CROAH) Group that need your attention.

    1) Nominations are now open for us to select the group read for July 2009.

The July 2009 read will cover John Adams. To nominate a book send a private note to one of the administrators with the book title, author, and a brief synopsis of the book. Another communication route is via the "Questions about this group?" box found on the Members page of the group.

We will post nominations sometime over the wekend following Friday, June 12. Voting will take place until Friday, June 19. The selection will be posted sometime that weekend.

    2) We'd really like your feedback on how the group worked for the first 2 group reads.

    http://www.shelfari.com/groups/34700/discussions/122443/May-vs-March-Discussion-Structure

    3) There is a new Shelfari group closely related to CROAH that we hope will interest you.

Thanks for helping make CROAH a great resource for learning more about the USA's history by examining each of its Presidents.

Wow! And I thought our system was complicated! So what happens now.

We are completely disgusted. I guess it will be interesting to see what Obama is better suited for: running a country or a car company. I can't believe what is happening to our economic system. We are seeing fundamental changes to the basics of our economic system all because we had a popularity contest rather than choosing a leader.

What do you think about the health care debate occuring in the US right now? Are you following it?
