"Just the omission of Jane Austen's books alone would make a fairly good library out of a library that hadn't a book in it."
-Mark Twain
"I am no fun at all. In fact, I am anti-fun. Not as in anti-violence, but as in anti-matter. I am not so much against fun - although I suppose I kind of am - as I am the direct opposite of fun. I...more »

Loved it, loved it, loved it. Made me want to start writing to perfect strangers.

Horrible, had to return it after a few pages. Disturbing to think of this empire's culture spreading its diseases throughout the world.

Ugh! Don't bother, just read Tolstoy instead :) And if you run into him, turn him back over in his grave.

Read this because Kate Morton (The House at Riverton) told me to. I like it immensely. It is certainly dark and gloomy right off the bat, and there was a tad too much of the Gothic. BUT, the characters' reflections on freedom/free will/living "the artist's life" were WELL worth the price of admission. Many read-aloud-able passages. This would make for a very good discussion-launcher.

I love this book. I do feel like I'm giving away my pedestrian, bestseller-loving taste in saying so, but I found it absolutely satisfying. Good on you Kate! If any of my so-called friends want to do me a service, read this book so I can stop stalking the Amazon reviewers. I don't know what exactly about this novel bothered me so much. I really wanted to like it, but it never quite crawled out of mediocre. Will give the prequel a try and then write off this author forever. That'll show her!

Can I call this my favorite book? I'm scared to. I've always left the number one and two spots open just in case. But if I were still on the market, I'd make this book a required read, I loved it that much.

This book made me wish I had discovered it years ago. Dodie Smith ended it just in time and, I think, just right. I was so perfectly satisfied when I turned over the last page.

I haven't read or been able to find this book on anyone's shelf. Has anyone heard of it? It sounds quite interesting.

I just picked this book up again after several years and read the first chapter to my kids. I got the same chills I got from the first reading. There is something so ... manipulatively nostalgic about this book. Even if you AND your parents are too young to have seen even the tail end of the 1920s.
