This book is critically acclaimed, which nowadays is shorthand for a book centered around a self-loathing, semi-affluent white middle-aged man unhappy with his life or circumstances. Basically, the literary equivalent of Sideways. If you liked that movie or don't have any taste, this could be the book for you. Even McEwan's writing talent cannot save this story.

A must read. Not only does it give easy, comprehensive summaries of the 8 major religions, but it does not hide from the bad (as well as the good) of each of the religions. An honest telling that does not hide behind all-is-good, one tent, multi-cultural speak.

Would have given it 4.5 stars if possible. Only thing holding it back from 5 stars is that it can get too technical at times and has an assumption that the reader understand financial terminology and markets. But this is just a minor issue as you can figure out the points that the author is trying to make. This is a must read book to help you understand the latest financial crisis and how it came about. Intelligently written and well researched. Incredibly impressed that this is Hyman's first book. Reads more like a book by a senior, established researcher. Kudos and look forward to your next book.

Skip this book and instead read Jacoby's article about his book in the Chronicle of Hier Education. All the good stuff from the book is in that short essay. Jacoby quickly loses the thesis of his book. The book should be retitled the Roots of Violence based upon the treatment of Jews and one of Freud's obscure theories and even more obscure novels or articles I read form the 18th century. It is obvious that Jacoby is uncomfortable straying outside of his discipline and area of expertise. A shame as the concept behind the book is an excellent one. Find a co-author in history or political science and re-launch this book.

Full disclosure- I read the first 40 pages and then skimmed another 30-40 pages. Was very excited to get this book and read it. Major disappointment. If you took Psychology 101 in college, don't bother reading this book. it adds nothing to the knowledge discipline of psychology (or history or sociology or any other -ology). Lesser version of Nudge or Outliers. Skip Art of Choosing. Read Predictably Irrational instead or better yet, Mindless Eating.
