Hi Carol: Thanks so much for your recommendations (I just added Scott Weidensaul's "Return To Wild America" to my Wish List)! Your snippets from "Rarest of Rare" were fascinating! Vladmir Nabokov being a butterfly expert was the only one of which I was aware. Thanks again! Scott

Greetings! Just a quick note to say hello; I trust all is well with you? Also, I was wondering what you thought of "The Rarest of the Rare" by Nancy Pick and Mark Sloan. The title sounded interesting! Any other recommended summer reads? Best wishes, Scott

Saguaro...are you still in the Sonora near the Sea of Cortez? We're moving down to Los Cabos in December. We haven't touched bases in awhile and it's nice to meet someone else who loves travel and the Maya pyramids.

Greetings! Thanks for your note, I enjoyed hearing about the Sandhill Cranes in Whitewater Draw! It must have been quite a sight! My wife and I have been to Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point) on a day trip from Organ Pipe National Monument. Is that near where you kayak? Two years ago we drove further into Sonora, and birded the Sierra Madrean area east of Hermosilla (Yecora). What a fantastic area! If interested, you can see my review for "Guide to the Birds of Mexico . . " by Howell where I listed some of my favorite sightings. Bottom line: I really love Southeast Arizona and Sonora, Mexico; I only wish I could get to both more frequently! Best wishes, Scott

Wow, you've been to Colima. I have a son living in Colima (city) and a graddaughter living in Manzanillo. My other son lives in Cabo San Lucas. It looks like we have some interests in common, except that you're far more adventurous than I am. Thanks for the note!

Problem with writers is they have to write:-)) And it takes time and solitude.

I've done little more on Shelfari than check in briefly every couple of days, as I plunge into research for a novel. Reading mostly, with 20 books in as many days: Irish Famine, Boston, Civil War eras.

Thanks for heads-up about The Islands. Never heard of the book, though subject of the Khoi-Khoi, as they're now known, was well-covered in The Covenant.

Talking of Michener, see last Friday's LA Times (Chris Reynolds) for an article on Michener's lost novela. Matecumbe, which has just been published.

Amazon is best for Brazil -- the new edition is paperback and has a macaw on the cover.
Browsing your shelf I see several African books in common...Matthiessen's "Tree Where Man Was Born" has long been an old favorite, (plus his Amazon walk in the fields of the Lord.)

    Hi Saquaro,

    Thanks for joining my friends!

My wife and I are going to South Africa in December -- the first time in 30 years! There's a clue to the journey in the last part of my biography...

Obviously, I've always remained close in spirit but no doubt will have much to absorb.

Enjoy the rest of the website. The story of The Covenant should ring a special chord!

    Best, Errol
