    Gone Girl

This is a best seller? Maybe, but it is also a bunch of crap. The writing is sort of like stream-of-consciousness with all the main chacters with the same snarky, self-absorbed, silly, shallow mind-set. Give yourself a break and don't read this lamebrain pile of dog . . .

Ron Argo: Whoa, thanks for the headsup, Dell. Won't go for this one; just shows you have to watch all the hype, and advertising, and actually read at least the first graph of a novel to make something of a judgement. I see you enjoy the play on words, in this case the sounds of sibilants. Nice. Somehow this business reminds me of the Sjowall/Wahloo mystery novels.... Whoa, thanks for the headsup, Dell. Keep reading.

    The Racketeer

I have read all of Grisham's books and this is the first time I have been disappointed. His books are either legal thrillers or humorous, or both. I have read all of Grisham's books and this is the first time I have been disappointed. His books are either legal thrillers or humorous, or both. This one is more of a mystery, but not a "who done it mystery," but a "why is he doing this" mystery. Too much vital information is kept from the reader until toward the end. Nevertheless, it is still a good story, teaches something about the legal system, and the main character is able to make up for being treated unfairly by taking off with the riches.

This book is long on character development and weak on action. After a popular city councelor dies unexpectedly from natural causes a chain reaction is set off in the small community to the detriment of most and to the benefit of few. This volume is gagging with introspection by every character with little action taking place until about page 140; this will discourage most readers before they get this far.

Where did those human heads, found on a movie stars property, come from? And who is killing all those drug dealers? Walking Money

It is a fun read about cops in Florida trying to track down money stolen from the safe deposit box of a phoney civil rights organization. Everyone seems to be crooked except the one accused on the crime. The story gets a little old and less funny as the book goes on.

    Threat Vector

It's a gripping story, not just because of the non-stop action, but because it could happen. Worldwide espionage through human manipulation combined with high-tech could happen, and maybe already has. And cyber-warfare might be in our future too. My literary friends may scoff, but this is a...

It's a gripping story, not just because of the non-stop action, but because it could happen. Worldwide espionage through human manipulation combined with high-tech could happen, and maybe already has. And cyber-warfare might be in our future too. My literary friends may scoff, but this is a very good book and should be read. My only fault is the unrealistic bravery on display in the last hundred pages.

But actually each of his books, so far, seems to be better than the last. "A Wanted Man" is number 17 -- another interesting and intricate thriller.

Susan, I hope you enjoy GOODBYE VIETNAM. I have gotten many positive responses. The book is based on interpersonal relationships in Vietnam in 1970-71. This is a part of war that is rarely...

I have one of her books on my shelves, I can't remember the title but I think it's about Alexander the Great. I've heard great things about her historical novels.

Susan: I had forgotten about this author, which I read years ago. May have to do a fresh look. I tend to like the 'heavier' historical fictions, tho. Really like your list and discussions. I have so many in my TBR piles.

Two intelligence agents from New York are sent to Yemen to track down an American born terrorist and find themselves also the target of the CIA. Great action, intrigue, and cultural descriptions. It made me not wanting to visit Yemen any time soon.
