When I first signed up to Shelfari, I thought I'd use it as a way of tracking my TBR pile and possibly shaming myself into reading more to clear some space on the bedside table (and beside the bedside table, and off the dining room table, the coffee table, the air hockey table downstairs and piled haphazardly on any flat surface I could find). Now I'm adding more and more books - things I've read as well as things I've got in my TBR piles. The downside is I'm now pulling down old favourites and re-reading them rather than working on the TBR pile. :)
I will read just about anything if it engages me - there are all kinds of reasons for me to pick up a book - to make myself think, to laugh, to cry, to learn, to be entertained, to escape, to be challenged, to relax - the list goes on.
My ratings are subjective - based on how much I enjoyed them, how much they affected me at the time and how fond my memories of them are.
Five Stars - Excellent
Four Stars - Very Good
Three Stars - Good
Two Stars - Fair
One Star - Horrible
Most books will have three or four stars, not because they aren't great, but because there's no point in rating if everything is at the top of the list. :)
Excellent books are those that made an impact in some way or another on me. Very Good are those that are ... very good. Good will be those that were enjoyable at the time but forgettable after the cover closed. Fair are those that are forgettable and I wouldn't really recommend them. Horrible are those that I couldn't bear to finish.
