“Michael Poore's UP JUMPS THE DEVIL is a unique portrayal of the Dark Lord himself, Satan, that will have you turning pages well into the night and choking down laughter to keep from waking up your partner. The only book I have read that combines history, drugs, rock and roll, and bestiality all into one outstanding package, I couldn't put it down and was sad when it was over.
John Scratch, also known as the The Devil, had a falling out with God before the world was made, and was cast down from Heaven along with his girlfriend. However, living on Earth among mankind was too terrifying for her, so she went back. Since that time John has been trying to forge civilization into something special and wonderful so she will come back. Unfortunately, the humans aren't cooperating. Along the way, John gets involved in the ancient Rome, falls in love with Pochahantas, fights in the Civil War, and is indirectly responsible for both Woodstock's success and the internet, all the while having a strange intimate relationship with several women and several cows.
Plenty of laughs to be found, but the writing is deeper than that. Its clever, poignant, and done in such a way that you actually root for the devil, seeing his less than endearing traits as minor flaws (he causes more than one person to disappear in blue fire). One of the most unique books I have read, it is definitely going into my personal library, and I am looking forward to more from the author.”
