I really enjoyed this book. I listened to it on audio and the author reads it herself - not always a good thing, but in this case it added a great deal. It was a very natural reading that seemed almost as if you were sitting having a drink with the author and she was telling you her life story. I really admired her straightforward honesty about her shortcomings and weaknesses, and I've read very few memoirs that are as honest. I related to the author's connection with God in a personal way, although I haven't had the intensity of experiences she described. I wouldn't be able to let go as completely as she did in Italy, giving herself over completely to hedonism (at least with respect to food and drink) but I admired that she immersed herself in her environment (as she did all of the places she visited.) Overall, interesting and very real.

I listened to this book on audio over a weekend and after a bit of a slow start, I couldn't stop listening. I liked that the story covered a time span from 1959, when one of the two main characters was born, through post 9/11. I didn't know very much about the history of Afghanistan before reading this, and now I feel have at least a general idea of some of the changes that have taken place in the country throughout past decades. Some parts of this book made me wince with empathy for the female characters in it and it made me feel very lucky to be living my life, not the lives of the women in Afghanistan.
