Lysistrata

I am a stay-at-home mother of a preschool-aged daughter, and the administrator of a local mom's website. I love reading and wish I had more time to do so. I started a book club through my mother's group in 2005 and I have found that to be very rewarding. I tend to get stuck in my genre of choice which is British crime fiction, but will read...more »

I have read all of Rendell/Vine books, and was not disappointed with this one. While I wouldn't say it's my favorite, I actually enjoyed the slightly happier ending this one provided than many of her others. I love the way she develops her characters. Marion and her spastic dancing! That cracked me up.

Very funny, especially if you grew up in the '70's. Some of it seemed a bit contrived, but overall it was very entertaining and I do recommend it.

I am woefully ignorant of Middle Eastern culture, beyond a few novels whose veracity should be questioned and what I see on the news. This beautifully written book told a story that transcends cultural boundaries, as well as draws a lovely and complex picture of what the people of Afghanistan have had to endure. Ths is a truly splendid book.

I found this book's premise very captivating. I can imagine how addicting a drug that allowed you to live in your best memories could be. While it wasn't the best book I read this year, it held my interest and was by far one of the more original books I've read in a long time.

I loved each persepctive of this book. I have always found this particular era of history fascinating. The formula, for me, of historical events embellished with beautiful prose and dialog is a special treat that I savor in every page.

Eh. Not as great as I was lead to believe. Great writing, but the characters seemed too contrived.

This is by far the best Children's version of the classic tale of Cinderella. The illustrations are amazing. I had this book as a child and purchased it for my daughter. It's incredible.

I love reading the books from my childhood to my three-year-old daughter. This was one of those books I couldn't wait for her to be old enough to truly enjoy. Now when I call her a Wild Thing she roars at me.

While I found this to be beautifully written, the prose actually distracted me from the story. Does that make any sense? It was like looking at a beautifully intricate piece of fabric - it had so many details and flourishes, I couldn't tell what kind of garment the fabric made. It was still an enjoyable (albeit cumbersome at times) read, but it did not strike me as being quite worthy of the amount of hype it received. I am sure that is just a matter of taste.
