  • Blogging Heroes: Interviews with 30 of the World's Top Bloggers
    • Rated 5 stars

I "had" to burn the rest of a Borders gift card, so aimlessly wandering the aisles I picked up Blogging Heroes: Interviews with 30 of the World's Top Bloggers and started thumbing through it. I have just started reading but so far this book of interviews with top bloggers is really good.

For you BLOGGING addicts . . . you will get two things out of the book. One, articulation/affirmation for some the practices and approaches that you already integrate into your blogging. And, two, a few nuggets and aha's that will seem so obvious, but you never knew.

For you BLOGGING newbies . . . you will get two things as well. One, you will benefit from the real-life experiences from real-life-bloggers about art and practice of blogging. And, two, it becomes painfully clear how NOT imposing blogging can be. These are pretty much regular Joe's who have found a way to share their knowledge and opinions and a significant number of people who care to read them.

Not everyone should/could be a blogging hero. There will be some limitations based on focus area, writing ability, intent and in my case, gray matter, but regardless of your blogging status, this is a good read.

First, this is the longest book I have almost EVER read ;-) I got about 500 pages in and felt like I was good to go. Abe was brilliant! Now I realize that there were about 400 pages left, but i figured I got the gist of the book. If you had to read 1/2 of a 900 page book on a brilliant political figure this year, this is the one!

Honestly, couldn't get through the first few chapters of ranting. While, I do think it is valid to raise some of the questions, the tone of the book seems to be as arrogant as he is accusing the 2.0'ers to be. Again, the 2.0 thing needs to be pushed, but this felt like another call to elitism and if the choices are elitism or open-source, I choose open-source. Good gracious, give me the benefit of the doubt that I'll do my research beyond wikipedia.

While you deep thinking theologians may not find this intellectually stimulating, Brian gives a some words to the yearning of postmodern Christians. For folks frustrated with the traditional/institutional church, but still yearn for Christian community, both local and global, this is well worth the read.

If you are wondering why you are drawn to choose one purchase over an other because you think it will somehow change the world - Red Campaign anyone? - Brooks offers some good insights. A conservative columnist, his assessment of the BOurgeois BOhemians culture is pretty good, though I disagree with some of his conclusions. A "modern" trying to explain away some "postmodern" tendencies wrapped in class and economic shifts requires some analysis beyond where he lands.

If you like historical fiction and the kind of suspenseful reading that will keep you up at night, this as well as his follow-up Angel of Darkness are for you. Both are fastpaced, well written and darn right gripping.

This is a must read not just for Pinoys, but for anyone who want to get a glimpse to the immigrant experience as told from a Filipino perspective. Not just simply a well written story, but an incredible moving piece of American history.
