What a great birthday! It's funny, but I've pretty much banned wedding talk. We started talking a little over a year ago.. and absolutely nothing has come of it. So last night in fact, he mentioned ring shopping over Christmas.. again (we did that last Christmas time) I said "No, we already did that and I'm not going to get my hopes up again for another year. I'm not doing it" (do you think that was mean or warranted?)
Halloween was good, not as many kids as last time. Tonight I have my work Christmas party.. which is kind of strange since we haven't even had Thanksgiving yet..
The election.. well.. they both really scared me. And I have some unsettled feelings about Obama too. I'm not sure if I completely trust him or his agenda. I was kind of wondering.. why didn't more people start to questions things about him and his past/policies etc. I really think the media did an awful biased job at coverage. I really didn't like either candidate, neither would of been my first pick.
I just started reading this great book! It's called The House on Tradd Street by Karen White, it's the beginning of a new series. The main character can see ghosts but it's something she has fought against and tried to ignore all her life. She inherits this old house with a mystery behind it, and ghosts along with it. It's really good so far. There's some romance but a lot of story and plot too. I like that. It's not too long either. So I'm slowly reading it and enjoying it. I also want to read the book Gilding Lily but my library co-op doesn't carry it and I don't want to buy it if I never read it again! Grrr.. lol.
I'm going to send you a private note with my email addy. If you want we can just email each other too, I might respond quicker.. lol. Sorry for the two week delay.
How's school going? Anymore cune stories? Work is going ok for me, still drama. But I figured it out that it stems from this one RN who is very histrionic and attention seeking. The way she carries on about things and is always taking personal phone calls and loudly talking about sex on the phone etc. it's aggravating. She's about 30ish too, so one would think she'd act like it and not like she is fresh out of high school. Obnoxious was one word someone used for her yesterday.. lol.
What are you up to this weekend anything fun? I want to put my Christmas tree up in my room, its jut a little one but it's cute. My cat loves to hide under it or look at the lights. Tomorrow I might try to go and see the Twilight movie.. but I've heard mixed reviews and now I'm hesitant to go.. I never should of read the reviews.. lol.
I love it! 1/2 rat and 1/2 cune! Hahah, too cute. You see the cutest things sometimes!
Fall here is great too! The colors are great and I love the smell of the neighbors wood burning stove! When I get my own house I decided a fireplace is a necessity!
So how was your birthday? What presents did you get?
This is so late, but my apologies about the Red Sox, I hope the pouting wasn't too severe, lol.
I do the same thing about weddings! I'm not engaged yet either but I'm definintly paying more attention.
I know what you mean about the weekends, I look forward to it all week and then it comes and goes so fast I never feel that I really recovered from the previous week's business.
Work drama.. there is always work drama. Last night I had to work with a super difficult surgeon. He's VERY slow, a case that would take any other surgeon like 1.5 hours to do, this guy will do in 4+ hours. You'd think he was doing a vascular case instead of a general surgery.. lol. He mumbles and changes his answers to questions so I'm never really sure what exactly he wants a specimen called or what he wants me to write for his entire procedure. He's condescending and got rude to me. My hand itched to throw the specimen container at his head! He said he wanted two specimens to go in separate containers, no problem, so when I return with them, he says "Now these go together" So I asked "You want them in one container?" He says "What did I tell you, I clearly told you these were to go in separate containers, where are the containers?" So I hold them up and yell "I have them right here!!" Ughh.. I had to go home and drink after that case.. lol.
What are you doing for Halloween? My mom, Steve's mom, me and my aunt are dressing as witches to hand out candy. Its' become a Halloween tradition at my house. The men refuse to dress up. Steve's mom brings over chili. This year we are having a small bonfire with drinks too. I'm really looking forward to it.
I've got the TV on now and there is soo much election coverage, I can't wait for it to be over! When I turn the radio on in the morning on my way to work to hear the news, thats all there is. I wonder what the news media will have to talk about when the election is over.. lol.
My new thing has been to watch old movies, reading has been on the backburner for a bit, I watched this black and white Hitchcock movie called Rebecca, it's based on the book by Daphne Du Maurier, it was so good! I also Tivo'd The Birds, I've never seen it and can't wait to watch it. I also watched this old black and white Pride and Prejudice with Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier, it was so good! I also love any Audrey Hepburn movie, except I watched My Fair Lady and wasn't all that impressed. Maybe it was all the singing.. confession.. I tivo'd so I fast forwarded through most of the songs! lol.
What are you reading now? Don't worry about going to bed early, the past two friday nights I fell asleep at like 945/1000. In fact, we rented Ironman to watch with Steve's parents and I fell asleep through that. It was funny I woke up just as it was ending to hearing Steve's dad say "What a great movie, I dont' know how anyone could sleep through a movie like that" lol.
Ok, I finally finished American Wife! It only took me like 3 weeks.. and I own it and will never read it again.. great. LoL.
How are the weddings coming along.. did you go to number 1 this weekend? I think Oct must be the new wedding month, so many people I know have weddings to go to in Oct. Next Oct I'm supposed to stand up in a wedding. Went wedding dress shopping with the bride yesterday. It was the first time I've ever gone wedding dress shopping. I couldn't believe how heavy most of the dresses were.
Chick-fil-a sounds so good! I wish we had one here. The number one sounds amazing, I always get extra pickles on my sandwiches too!
I'm a small town girl too, I have always wanted to go to Yorktown and Jamestown, I told my bf that my ultimate vacation would be to do a 2 week tour of the east coast during the fall and go to all the historical sites.
I'm still reading the Lori Handelbrand series, which is good but I wouldn't buy the books, get them from the library. I'm looking for my next book to read though, maybe I'll try the Firebird trilogy, we have the same reading tastes so maybe I'll like it too.
Omigosh, what a hairstyle on a white boy. I had this mental picture of it and laughed out loud! Are there boys with mullets and rat tails?? I don't understand how some parents STILL think thats a cool hairstyle for a boy. I worked at a daycare while I was in college and we had a boy with that hairstyle, we all wanted to cut his rat tail and tell the parents that some other kid got a hold of scissors and cut his hair.. lol.
Hairspray poofed bangs!!!! No way!!! Thats what I wore in my 4th grade picture! No joke, granted that was like 15 years ago ish... are you 10 when you are in 4th grade? I can't remember. I can't wait to hear more kid stories, you must have the most interesting days!
Nursing drama.. when isnt' there drama. Lets see, I had a surgeon mad at me because he said I was "freaking out the patient" heres why: On HIS history and physical for the patient he had written on the chief complaint: Right breast mass, then on his diagnosis he had : Left breast mass. On the consent for surgery it was for Right breast biopsy.. anyway all I wanted his to do was fix the H&P to clarify which one we were doing surgery on, it's part of our Universal Protocol so we don't operate on the wrong surgical site. He was so mad at me and scribbled Right over the left and didn't say two words to me during the surgery, so childish.
Another great drama: last weekend I was on call 7am-7pm, well, the nurse I was on call told me I was actually on call for the 24 hours, when I told her I had plans and was only scheduled for 12 hours each day she said "you're on orientation, its implied that you are oncall for 24 hours" (she was on call with me and wanted me to do all her work in other words..lol) I told her I couldn't do it and if she wanted me to be on call 24 hours over the weekend be clear in the schedule and write that. So in november the third weekend she made it quite clear I'm on call ALL weekend.. lol. I keep telling myself "I love my job, I love my job"
I'm going to this outdoor mall today and am so excited. Its a gorgeous fall day and I need some new fall clothes. I think I'm wierd, I bought some new shirts last fall and when I tried them on this fall I thought they all looked funny and fitted me wierd, which wasn't the case a year ago. I find this happens all the time to me, whether it's year old summer/spring clothes. My clothing size hasn't changed all that much either.. so I dont' know. Does this happen to other girls, or am I just wierd? Its not all my year old clothes, I've had some staple outfits for a couple years now that always look good and haven't gone out of style.
What are you up to today now that you've finished the mini novella I've written you? lol.
I told myself I'd log in more frequently.. sorry for the delay (yet again) in replying. Last week was soooo hectic getting ready for the family reunion and aunt's wedding that occurred over the weekend.
Congrats on the lunchbox! I bought one in May when I started my new job, I too carried grocery bags for some time.. lol.
That is so funny! I can't believe your boyfriend's name is Steve too! I understand about being patient for the wedding thing.. Steve's in his last year of law school and looking for a job in that field.. so financially it's not exactly the best time... I know he's thinking about it because his two best friends have proposed to their girlfriends recently.
I read the first two Handeland books, they are pretty decent. I like series so I have to read what happens to other characters in the first book! :) I just read the newest Sherrilyn Kenyon book called Acheron and really thought it wasn't good.. in fact I was really disappointed. She got kind of goofy, silly humor that was bordering on stupidity.. (that was a harsh comment, but thats what I thought.. lol)
I have heard of Chick-fil-A but I don't think there are any in Michigan.. if so not around where I live. Sounds soooo good. What do you get when you go there? I love sweet tea! It's hard to find in Michigan unless you make it yourself or buy the premade Arizona kind. When I go south that's all I get to drink.. lol.
Whats PA like? I've always wanted to go.
Still reading American Wife, it's good but doesn't necessarily hold my interest to the point where I can't put it down. In fact, I've read a couple other books while reading that one.. lol. American Wife is a fictional book that the author based the story loosely on Laura Bush. It's good, not my favorite and I'm not sure if I'd reread it, which is unfortunate because I bought it.. lol.
What are you reading now? How's school going? Any problem kids in class?
It sounds like you have an amazing school schedule this semester! I've been feeling the pressure to head back myself. Maybe winter semester....
I don't think I've read Lori Handeland... I like werewolve books. I'm going to go to the library's website and see if there are any of her books. Omigosh, I started to read this book by Nina Bangs about this demon and a demon hunter... it is the stupidest book I've read in the longest time. Seriously, there's these wierd talking cats, characters named Sparkle Stardust who owns some freaky candy store and likes to dress the main female character in slutty outfits.. anyway.. I actually was feeling dumber as I was reading it. I was wondering what publishing company would take a manuscript like that and publish it....
I haven't heard of Karen Hancock, I'll have to check her out. I just picked up American Wife (forgot the author, she wrote the chick lit book Prep) it looks kind of good. I guess it's loosely based on Laura Bush.. I was so traumatized from my Nina Bangs experience I was scared to trust my judgement in the fantasy section of the bookstore.. lol.
My boyfriend's name is Steve, we will have been dating for 4 years in November. We were kind of friends in high school, he is a year older than me, but didn't start dating until about 2 years after high school.
My town library is the same as yours I think! I too have resorted to wandering the aisles hoping some book will catch my attention. Then usually I'm not satisfied with what I find.. lol. My library does this neat thing where they have racks of tradeable books where you can pick out whatever you want and take it to read and return it if you want or you can keep it. That's where I usually find the good books. :)
Yeah, the money thing, I couldn't even last 10 days.. lol. I bought that book and then candles, lotions, body wash from Bath and Body Works. I had to get some fall stuff you know.. lol. All of it completely necessary purchases I couldn't live without.. lol ;)
I'm so sorry you had the flu! Thats terrible. There's been some bug going around here too. I didnt do too much for labor day. Last weekend was our small town's yearly festival/carnival. My younger brother was in the outhouse races, which I had never seen before. It was hilarious. His team built this small outhouse and put it on a big tricycle like bike and one person rides/steers while the two other people push them. The teams race and the winner is in the parade that is on Sunday. One guy on the other team lost his gym shorts while running, so it was completely ironic this guy was running without pants pushing an outhouse.
This weekend has been more low key, it's been raining non stop all weekend. I ended up going to the mall and walking around. Now catching up on laundry and getting ready for the week.
How was your weekend? Did you have a lot of homework? Did you get to read a Sherrilyn Kenyon book? I'm still number 24 in line for it at my library.. why can't people read faster! :)
Anything else new and exciting?
How was school this week? Was it hard to get back into it after summer? I always struggled with that.
Uggh, it's really stupid how I hurt my back. I have a slight birth defect (so the doctor told me, we never knew this) in my lower back with how the vertabrae fused, so it's a little weaker than normal people's backs. Anyway, I was bending over to get something out of the laundry basket and felt something "give" or pull I guess in my back. It was bad for about 3 weeks and now it's getting better.
I love Target! That store has the neatest stuff! I always leave with more than I planned on buying there.
I read this series by Anne Stuart where all the titles have Ice in it. It's not really fantasty or supernatural, it's more about covert operations and a secret organization like the CIA called the Committee. They are romance books. I thought they were fun reads. I'm kind of in between reads and searching for something new. Have you read Sherrilyn Kenyon's fantasy books? I've had her newest ones on hold from the library for forever. I checked to see my position and I'm still numbers 23 and 24 in line for it... by the time I get them she'll have written even newer ones... lol. But I hate to spend a lot of money on books if I know I'm going to only read it once. I usually only buy books if 1. I know I'm going to reread it. 2. I must have it and can't wait for my turn at the library 3. Its been discounted a lot like at a garage sale, used bookstore or library booksale.
The beach was great and I spent so much money! I went to this neat store called Wild Dog and bought a shirt and sweatshirt plus a painting of a yellow lab that looks identical to my boyfriend's dog. The owner is fostering 8 dogs and a guinea pig named Oreo! She was trying to get me to foster some dogs too but there was no way. It was neat to see all the pet toys and food she had. It was sad, most of her fostered animals were home foreclosures where people left them behind. The guinea pig was found wandering around in the garage of one. I don't know if it's that bad in Virginia, but in Michigan there seems to be alot of home foreclosures. So I went a little overboard in buying at that store, since I am such an animal lover. So I too need to not spend money for 10 years. lol.
Hope you are having a fun relaxing Labor Day! What are you reading? I need some good recommendations too! :)
hello renee how are u and i like ur good hobby and i am interst in u so i want to make a friend to you and share books with you do u contect with me my phone number is +923465859771 in pakistan and my email address is email@example.com and firstname.lastname@example.org so i am waiting ur mail and call .will be nice to meet u .and take care
Hi Renee! You asked me which copy of the Women of the Otherworld series was my favorite. I am not sure if I can choose a favorite. As I read each one, I loved that one in particular at the time. LOL! But if I HAD to choose one, I guess I would choose Haunted. It's the one about Eve, the witch who died in Stolen. Each book was good in it's own way, so I think you will enjoy all of the rest of them, if you enjoyed the first two. I really hated getting to the end of the series, and having to leave them. I am eagerly awaiting the 9th in the series, and have loaned my copies of the first 8 to friends at work who love the same kind of books that I do. They are passing them along to one another as they finish them, and say that they are really loving them.
I'm such a terrible shelfari friend! I'm so sorry it's taken me so looong to reply to your messages, it's been that long since I've logged in. Work has been crazy and I messed up my back. Which makes me mad because I'm waay too young to have a bad back.. grrr..
Anyways.. I'm so glad you liked the Twilight series. I love that series, I've seriously re-read the books a couple times, which is so unlike me. I'm not one to reread books, mostly because I always have too many I want to read.
You made me laugh! I can't stand Cassie Edwards!!!! I picked up one of her books at the library when there was absolutely NOTHING to read there, so I figured I like romance and I'll try it. I hated it! I think it might have been the same Indian one.... unless she writes a lot of Indian ones.. lol.
I have no idea how old Valek is, good question. I don't know if it ever said. When you picked it up the book were you a bit skeptical? I wasn't sure if I was going to like it because it seemed like there was too much sci-fi for me in it. As soon as I read it I was hunting for the next one in the series. I wonder if she is working on more in the series.
Are you doing anything fun this weekend before school starts Monday? I took today off work and am going to the western side of Michigan for a long weekend. The beaches there are nice and there is a lot to do. A couple nurses yesterday tried to make me feel bad for taking the day off, nurses can be a snotty group of women (and I'm saying it nicely). Then I found out that they put in for the same day off that I did after I put in for it so they didn't get it. So much drama... are teachers like that? lol.
I've never been to Virginia. What's the best things to do there?
Have a great weekend and I promise I won't be so late in replying anymore! :)
Hi! welcome and thanks for joining the Jane Austen Book Club! Please make yourself at home in the group! There are lots of great discussions but if you would like feel free to start a new one of your own! See ya there.....
Also, if you happen to enjoy the UK and chatting about all things British, check out Across the Pond! http://www.shelfari.com/groups/18903/about
Hi ! I just wanted to stop by and invite you to come and check out my new group called The Jane Austen Book Club! It's a great group of great Shelfarians who love to engage in all things Austen! I hope you will come and join us! Thanks!
Hey! What did you think of the Twilight series? Also, did you check out some of my author recommendations?
Here's my take on Breaking Dawn: it might start slow and maybe a bit wierd. But keep reading, it gets better and I ended up liking it. I won't say more because I dont' want to spoil it for you. :)
You are so funny, I was the same way when reading the Russians! Yeah.. the story of Anna and Sergei is mostly over. The rest of the books are about their kids and they are in them, but the story essentially isn't about them. Books 1-3 are the best anyway! :)
Have you read any books by Kelley Armstrong? She writes a great fantasy series called Women of the Underworld. I also really like Maria Snyder she writes a series with the first book called Poison Study, then Magic Study, the newest is Fire Study. I seriously did not think I would like these books, it was a little too much fantasy for me when I was reading the back of the book, but when I picked up the first one.. I LOVED it, couldn't put it down. I like Sherrilyn Kenyon too as a fantasy writer.
I'm in nursing now, I've been a nurse for about a year now. So I'm still a pretty new nurse. I started out working on the Mental Health unit and found it really wasn't for me. So I applied and got and OR job that has a year long orientation, so I'm in orientation now. I like the OR a lot more than Mental Health. I've always wanted to be a teacher, from when I was a little kid. I like to learn and share knowledge with others. Plus, I really like working with kids. I didn't go into to it because I was too concerned with the job market for teachers in Michigan. I'm still thinking of taking classes and working towards my teaching degree.. I haven't heard of a 5 year program where you can earn your masters. That is terrific. In a year do you start student teaching or have you already done that?
Well you can guess my favorite probably has to be P&P due to the fact that I am in love with Mr. Darcy (or Colin Firth??). However due to having to stay home for a week after having surgery I decided to read & watch Persuasion, and I forgot how much I really love that book. The movie is great too with Amanda Root. Its good to hear someone else shares my enthusiasm for the alternative reality world of Jane Austen haha. :-)
Renee, I think you are my long lost reading twin! LoL, I have read about everything Nora Roberts has written, she's great! I love her fantasy books. I stray from Historical Fiction into Fantasy all the time... lol. I read the first book in the Outlander series and loved it! I need to get around to read the rest of the books in the series. I love the Harry Potter books, have you read the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer? It's YA but I know ALOT of adults that are reading them too. It's got vampires..so you might get hooked.. lol.
If you want to know some more fantasy authors I like let me know. I've got my favs.. :)
Molly Murphy series does have some romance (which I like) it's an ongoing thing she has between her and a police captain who is betrothed to someone else that has a higher social standing and her family helped him get promoted. Molly finds this out later and the captain swears he is going to break his engagement. I won't tell you more.. but it's an ongoing side story through out the whole series. It's getting good now that there have been more books so more time for story development. I like mysteries that have romance in them, I couldn't like a book that didnt' have at least some romance in it, I'm such a girlie girl.. :)
Do you teach school now? I see you want to be an elementary school teacher. I was going to go into that if nursing didn't work out, some days I still toy with the idea of going back to school and getting my teaching degree.
Renee, I was the same way! For years, all I read was historical fiction with a Christian basis too! The Cheney Duvall series is one of my favs, along with the House of Winslow. I've read most of Francine Rivers' books, loving the Mark of the Lion series. I lost count how many times I've reread that series. I have read the Brides of Montclaire, though it's been years since I've read the series. Have you read Pella's newer series, the name of it escapes me right now, but it's about three sisters in WW2, their father is a popular newspaper publisher and it starts in California? The one sister wants to be a reporter though her father does not take her seriously since she is not a man. I dont' want to give away too much of the plot.
Lady Elizabeth was so so, I didn't care for it. It's about the early years of Elizabeth Tudor prior to her becoming queen. The author took a GIANT liberty that kind of ruined the book for me, it became tedious and unbelievable. I read it for historical fiction challenge but was so disappointed. Right now I just finished reading the Molly Murphy mystery series by Rhys Bowen, I couldn't put those books down! It's set in early 1900s New York and Molly escapes from a nasty situation in Ireland. She becomes a female investigator and the books are about her cases plus each one allows for more character development. I'm hooked!
What are you reading?
What are you into reading? Do you like historical fiction with a Christian basis? I recommend The Russians a series by Judith Pella (or another series she writes about three sisters during WW2 is excellent) Brock and Bodie Thoene have two great series as well set in WW2. I couldn't put those ones down. You know about Gilbert Morris, have you checked out the Cheney Duvall series written by his daughter Lynn Morris. It's about a female doctor post Civil War (another fav series of mine) All are Christian fiction. I read this great historical mystery series by Victoria Thompson about a midwife in New York, I loved that series.
I hope my suggestions sound interesting. Anything sounding good? I'm reading The Lady Elizabeth by Alison Weir for the reading challenge and so far it's terrific!
