I am an editor....and have been reading all my life.
I was a huge reader when I was in school and college. Got my hands on my first grown-up book while in class 7, all of 11 years old then, a Perry Mason, I remember. That was after the usual Enid Blytons -- the twins at St. Clare's, the famous five, Mallory Towers, and the secret sevens. Nancy Drew never really caught my fancy, but Perry Mason and James Hadley Chase did. I used to maintain a little notebook way back then, and would dutifully write down the titles of all the books I read. My little black book mentions some 49 Chases, 17 Barbara Cartlands, 13 Agatha Christies, and 25 Perry Masons. Since I scarcely remember a word of what I read in that era, I haven't bothered to line my Shelfari shelf with them.
In those days, I would raid bookshelves of everyone in the neighbourhood and, therefore have read all manners of books......some great titles by Nevil Shute (never discovered why people never read him), A J Cronin, Alistair Macleans, Graham Greene, Somerset Maughm, and more. After school, I discovered I was good for nothing but fiction, so English it was in college. Those five years ensured that I topped up my reading list with some respectable Austens, Hardys, Dickens, Shakespeare (12 of them), poetry (ugh), drama, even Greek literature!
Reading took a backseat when I got into a job (yep, journalism, what else?) and along came the husband and son. They took over my life for almost two decades and I barely got through the usual best-sellers during this time.
Now I read everything once again.....but alas, the speed is slow and I always seem to have something else that requires my speedy attention! The dog, the garden, the car, the maids, work deadlines, more work, and more work still.......the drill goes on. But at the end of the day, I do manage to put my feet up......to read!
Cheers!
