I read because I write; anyone who claims to be a writer, but never picks up a book, isn't a writer. To be a great writer (and I am not claiming to be a great one) one must first develop an intimate, sultry love affair with the written word.

I most certainly will read some of your writing. I'm old enough to have learned a good part of what I know about writing when there was no web, in fact, no PC's. As a reader, I know that writing for the web is different, and I'm trying to find what I consider good writing online so that I can take it apart and see what makes it run.

Criticism has always improved writing. If you feel the same, I'd be happy to share my reactions to your writing. An editor once gave me an assignment because I critiqued an entire issue of her little quarterly. Honest, but never harsh--one of my life rules.

Not long winded at all, no apology needed. After I sent the note, I realized that any preference among those three writers is just that. In fact, I feel that way generally about comparing artists of any kind and awarding prizes to the "best." Thus my disdain for the Nobel exercise.

I too have a list of writers I'd like to meet, many of them dead. I came very close to seeing Borges in Argentina. He was fairly accessible and liked visitors to read to him. Part of the appeal of visiting Wales was the possibility of meeting Jan (formerly Mr. Jan) Morris, but I decided that perhaps she lives alone in a small town to get away from well-meaning admirers. I also thought of Raymond Chandler's advice that it's usually disappointing to meet writers. One exception for me was Ron Carlson, who seems to be as fine a person as he is a writer.

Now I've gone on long enough. I must get out and cruise OC for some material for an article on unusual businesses. Like a company here in Anaheim that specializes in replica fossils, particularly skulls.

    Regards,
    Farron Brougher

    Hello,
I hadn't seen the story collection American Masters until I spotted it on your shelf, with a top rating. Among Carver, Cheever, and Updike, do you have a favorite? Mine is Cheever, partly because I know a lot about his sad life and see some of it woven into the stories.
Some writers get more intimate with the written word than others. One whose name eludes me now learned by typing the work of a great author.

Hi Rebecca. Thanks for adding me as a friend. I noticed in your profile you're a writer; anything published? You have a pretty neat selection of books. I am busily adding my real-life library, which will take a while, but then I hope to write something about some of the books I read. Anyway, I'm travelling right now, reading from my book, so can't stay on too long. Keep well.
    Adam.
