  • Benighted
    • Rated 4 stars

Benighted (Bareback in the UK) is a striking and well-written novel set in a grim alternate reality. The emoting is on the heavy-handed side, but the main character and the world are engrossing.

Benighted is not the typical werewolf novel that’s flooded the market recently. Like my favorite speculative fiction, Benighted alters today’s world just enough to create pointed social commentary. It’s refreshing to see writing that makes me empathize with a challenging character.

  • My Life in Heavy Metal
    • Rated 5 stars

My Life in Heavy Metal is a dozen stories about sex and love, being together and standing apart. Almond has a wonderfully strong and pungent voice. Some of the stories are excellent, some are duds; several have stuck with me. Well worth the read. In the best of the collection, Almond truly inhabits his characters. Not only the protagonist, and not only the male characters; he also writes secondary characters who matter. The lively characters are the key to these stories in which, as Almond says, "What they do, and quite vigorously, is have sex and suffer heartbreak." More review of the stories themselves here: http://www.readforpleasure.com/2007/08/steve-almond-my-life-in-heavy-metal.html

  • The Myth of Mars and Venus: Do men and women really speak different languages?
    • Rated 5 stars

Cameron debunks the idea that men and women have innately different language skills and preferences.[br/][br/]There's an excellent review here:[br/]http://books.guardian.co.uk/reviews/politicsphilosophyandsociety/0,,2195026,00.html[br/][br/]I've linked to some fascinating (and funny) excerpts of her book, and a BBC Radio 4 interview:[br/]http://www.readforpleasure.com/2007/10/myth-of-mars-and-venus.html

  • Best New Paranormal Romance
    • Rated 3 stars

Some of these stories are excellent. The writing is consistently high-quality, though a couple of the stories are insubstantial and fizzle after a few pages. Unfortunately, the two space stories are so full of old-school sci fi tropes that I can't imagine why they're included as new, paranormal, or romance.

Several stories have a strong theme of accepting difference. Magic, myth, and love are varyingly portrayed as a sweet part of everyday life, and as a more chilling power. Some of the stories are love stories, but some aren't even vaguely romantic; I wonder whether simply including so-called feminine concerns (matings, weddings) justified their inclusion. Similarly, a few stories involve the paranormal in some form, but others seem questionable.

I've discussed the individual stories more here:

  • Dr. Tatiana's Sex Advice to All Creation: The Definitive Guide to the Evolutionary Biology of Sex
    • Rated 4 stars

Evolutionary biologist Olivia Judson assumes the breezily reassuring persona of Dr. Tatiana, sex columnist to the wild kingdom. Dr. Tatiana sheds a delightful light on relationships, counseling and reassuring creatures ranging from sea sponges to elephants.

Judson has endless examples of strange and fascinating mating habits. She doesn't over-extrapolate her findings to humans, or even to other similar species. If anything, she bends over backward to demonstrate the variety and diversity of sex and mating customs.

Even so, it's a lot of fun applying Judson's lively descriptions to humans. All in fun, of course.

  • SPENDING: A Novel
    • Rated 4 stars

Monica Szabo is in her 50s, divorced, with grown children, and responsible only to herself. For years she's taught art and taken care of a family rather than full-time creating art. What would it take to truly throw herself into the artist's life?

    A sugar daddy.

It's a great premise, and Gordon explores it thoughtfully.
