"Books are mirrors: you only see in them what you already have inside you."

Like everyone here, I love to read. I enjoy all types of books . . . I don't have many people in my life that enjoy reading as much as I, therefore, I have truly enjoyed meeting and discussing books with all my Shelfari friends.

Wonderful wonderful book . . . loved the history added to the story, as it is an important part of history that is not often known. Loved the characters, which immediately grab you from the first sitting and will be with you for long after you have finished the book. The entire book grabs you and many tearful moments, so was a bit disappointed that the ending didn't quite grasp what I was expecting. However, loved this book . . . adding to the top of my favorites.

Excellent read . . . once you start, the story, the people stay with you in each moment. It was actually hard to see it end, but a truly amazing read from the view point of a child. Loved loved loved this book.

My favorite quotes from the book:

“Religion is really a moral code that is expressed through legens, myths, or any type of literary device in order to establish a system of beliefs, values, and rules with which to regulate a culture or a society.”

“It’s impoosible to initiate a rational dialogue with someone about beliefs and concepts if he has not acquired them through reason. It doesn’t matter whether we’re looking at God, race, or national pride.”

"Beliefs arise from an event or character that may or may not be authentic and rapidly evolve into social movements that are conditioned and shaped by the political, economic, and societal circumstances of the group that accepts them."

"Fables teach us that humn beings learn and absorb ides and concepts through narrative, through stories, not through lessons or theoretical speeches."

"One can convert only a sinner, never a saint."

"Nothing is fair. The most one can hope is of things to be logical. Justice as a rare illness in a world that is otherwise a picture of health. "

"I miss having a villain. Whether we realize it or not, most of us define ourselves by opposing rather than by favoring something or someone. To put it another way, it is easier to react than to act. Nothing arouses a passion for dogma more than a good antagonist."

"We project onto him (the villain) all those things we are incapable of recognizing in ourselves, things we demonize according to our particular interests."

    My favorite quotes:

"Presents are made for the pleasure of who gives them, not for the merits of who receives them.”

"Books are mirrors: you only see in them what you already have inside you."

“Destiny is usually just around the corner. Like a thief, a hooker, or a lottery vendor: its three most common personifications. But what destiny does not do is home visits. You have to go for it.”

“It funny how we judge others and don’t realize the extent of our disdain until they are no longer there, until they are taken from us. They’re taken from us because they’ve never been ours . . .”

"Sometimes we think people are like lottery tickets, that they’re there to make our most absurd dreams come true.”

I thought this was a wonderful read . . . from the first page until the last, I was totally engrossed in it, all I could not put it down until the end. My first Deveraux read, so I am looking forward to seeking out more of her books.

I loved this book. I read it because my son was given it as a reading assignment in school. I thought it was a great example of how some of us are taught to accept the status quo, that what is safe to them is good and you don't need anything more, but there are some of us who yearn for something more, you don't always know what it is, but once you see it you recognize it and know you cannot live with it . . . .

This is the first book of Dean Koontz I had read. I loved this book and now love all Dean Koontz books . . . some are better than others, but he always has characters you care about.
