I love to read and spent likely an unhealthy amount time doing it as teenager and young adult. Was very shy until I came out of my shell in my late twenties. Now have to find time to read but still manage it- usuallly on the bus to and from work. I have traveled and lived outside the United States, on both coast and in the south. Have read a... more »

The book is more than about Fred Rogers. It's about the development and trust of a friendship found unexpectantly and nutured. The background of the book is about Fred Rogers and you do learn things about him that you were never aware of but the essence of the book is about a special bonding between two people that ends up spanning a lifetime.

I find this interesting as I work in ear nose and throat and have had patients complain of similar "musical sounds" - until reading this book I truthfully thought they were a little crazy. The explanations Dr Sacks gives for the temporal lobe makes sense. It is amazing how people have learned to cope with these sounds in their heads.
I had ordered this book and before it came I attended a national conference in Chicago where a speaker recommended it for understanding how music can help heal and how some brain damaged patients respond to music when all else appears to fail.

I enjoyed this book. I ride a bus to work everyday and this has made me look at the drivers and other passengers in a new way. They all have other interest and lives that we can only wonder about. Makes you not take things at face value. To dig beneath the surfaces to find out more about them.

  • For My Daughters

This is my favorite book from this author - having grown up in large family it really hits home how families can become so spread out and live unconnected lives, then something happens to bring them back together. Through the mother's secret plan to bring the daughters back together on the pretense of meeting with her each daughter is forced to face the connections she has had and needs to have with her siblings.
