I first read this one morning when I was nine. I awoke early at David's house, picked it off his shelf, and sat down and read it. Awesome!

I now read this book almost every year with my students. It's a good wholesome story. Students understand and enjoy talking animals. It may be slightly slower in pace than what they prefer, but the plot is captivating.

It's always good to read the classics.

This is the book that I fell in love with Van Allsburg's writing. It used to be part of the anthology we used in our district. I believe I first read this during my first graduate program as I created a unit around Van Allsburg at the time.

What can happen when siblings don't follow directions? Lots!

I have never seen the movie and have no desire ever to.

I read this with a group of fifth graders several years ago. Lovely language. Good story. The students were not quite as into it as I was. I think it is slightly dated these days, but still a fabulous read.

I've been using this book daily with my fourth grade classes for about 15 years. I find it a wonderful tool to drill basic mathematical facts.

Another book I read in conjunction with some work I completed for the Franklin Institute.

I read this for a project I was working on for the Franklin Institute. I don't recall enough of it to rate it a decade later.

Traditional version with illustrations reminiscent of the 1970s School House Rock series. It's a good tale.

One of the better fractured fairy tales, and perhaps the first I ever read. Scieszka is a master. He nails the nagging princess to a T. It's nice that he includes snippets from other familiar tales along the way.

The ending, classic with a twist, hammers home the excellent story here. Bravo!

An okay retelling of this classic. It's traditional, but it adds details about the carriage at the end that are superfluous to my needs in the classroom.

  • How to Write Your Life Story

I just kind of picked this up off the bookshelf with no plan, idea, whatever. It's an easy ready and interesting to boot. Fletcher takes the reader through the craft of writing an autobiography. Again, I had no plans with this book so I didn't read it as a how-to. He explores many considerations in the process.

It's interesting in that while I have no plan to write my autobiography, I do blog and have for years. In a way, the blog is a collection of those stories Fletcher encourages us to capture.
