What can I say? I'm your average everyday ordinary 6'2" man-mountain with a personal library worth more than most of the cars I've owned.

It will take AGES for me to flesh out my personal shelf here. After all, I have (at last count) six 6ft tall bookcases that are doublestacked in many cases and still have over 12 boxes of books not... more »

I'm a big fan of Simon Green. His earlier novels helped me through the drudgery and insanity of my time in the military oh so many years ago. So, with baited breath, I look forward to any new series he puts out.

Sadly, the Ghost Finders series is off to a rocky start with this first installment. I hope things will smooth out as the storyline progresses with the future novels. But, as of now, it holds last place on the long list of Green's many series.

Don't get me wrong. The characters are engaging and the dialogue is amusing ( even though a bit of it is recycled from other novels. ). However the plot progression seems a bit forced and choppy. Also, some of the actions of certain characters seems a bit odd ... even for individuals who hunt ghosts for a living.

I give it three stars because there is no 1/2 points here. If given that choice; I'd go with a 2 1/2. I didn't dislike the book. But I'm pained to say that I actually liked it.

This was my first exposure to Lackey. Her brand of "bubblegum fantasy"(1) helped me get through many a rotation in my military days.

It's no "Lord of the Rings". But, then again, does one NEED another?

I usually HATE to pick up a series this late into it. But, Whispering Nickel Idols not only was an enjoyable read; it also caused me to seek out the rest of the series.

If you like the gumshoe aspects of The Dresden Files.
If you like stories where the main character is a military veteran.
If you like a series that combines the best of the old Nero Wolfe books with low fantasy.

This is a series for you.

I'm reading it now, so my review will come later. But I feel obligated to say this while I am reading.

    Mac ... speaks.

Mac has dialogue that takes up an entire paragraph.

Let THAT sink in for a moment so you can picture just how appropriate the title of this book is truly.

    Mr. Hands

Not the best horror novel I've read, but most certainly not the worst. It lifts parts from many pop culture sources that came before it ... It mixes "Pumpkinhead" with a good dash of the "Friday the 13th" television series from the late 80s.
