Joseph Ellis brings these mythic figures to life and describes their struggles with each other and the great questions of their day, problems which echo in our own time. I've read Ellis' other works as well and find him both scholarly and accessible, not always a combination seen in popular histories.

I thought I knew the Gettysburg story about as well as anybody but this book has given me a fresh perspective. I spent yesterday in Gettysburg going over the ground Carhart discusses. His argument is both intuitively appealing and factually compelling. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Civil War, Lee, or Gettysburg.

This is one of the better Robicheaux novels, and particularly pleasing since the last few seemed so listless. This book is also important in that it brings alive as only a novelist can the impact of Katrina and Rita on New Orleans. Burke's words describing the disaster are worth a thousand pictures.I highly recommend it!

  • Lincoln's Melancholy: How Depression Challenged a President and Fueled His Greatness
    • Rated 5 stars

I highly recommend this book! I learned much I hadn't known about Lincoln; looking at him through the lens of his melancholy was a great way to grasp a more complete picture of the man rather than the mythic hero. I also loved the description of how the view of melancholy/depression has evolved over the last two centuries. Shenk also challenges a lot of what most bpeople believe to be true about Lincoln with respect to his relationships with Anne Rutledge and Mary Todd. A great read!

  • The March

A good read! Doctorow gives a vivid, present tense account through the unsentimental and unsentimentalized eyes of those on Sherman's march to the sea, including a freed slave among others. The girl is simply remarkable - and believable. Enjoy this one!
