I’m originally from Cleveland, Ohio and ended up in North Carolina by way of Syracuse, NY. What I wanted to do was work in theater - and, oddly enough, I am. This means I should have a day job, which could be anything from waiting tables to office management to engineers depending on who you ask what they do. I’ve become a database geek with... more »

The use of very common greek mythical names (Cass & Andie) confused me for a bit at the beginning, because I couldn't figure out how they were going to do the fairy tale tie-in with the greek myth...but it turned out that they took one element (virgin sacrifices with the Princess being one of them) but the rest was tossed out. I do love how they solved the HEA ending for everyone at the end.

Previously read, I enjoyed re-reading this as an introduction to the Five Hundred Kingdoms. The layout is typical Lackey - stranger from outskirts not knowing about "The Tradition" which she then learns to wield and all the implications. Being ~YA reading level, there's romance and marriage but no sex "on screen"

When writing epic fantasy, I've always held the belief that middle books are hard. And the longer the series, the more "stuff" in the middle. A Song of Ice & Fire is dealing with this like so many of the predecessors did: slog on through. Unfortunately, at this point in the series it is hard to tell if the slogging will be worth the journey when your heart gets stamped on repeatedly in the process.

This novel, without giving things away, works fairly well in tandem with Feast of Crows. However, was it worth the six year wait? at points - yes. But there were many points where I was seriously tempted to give up. Dany, queen of Slavers Bay shows that she can be almost Twilight-esque when faced with a boy she loves. Arya grows up. Jon questions himself. Bran goes on a journey to really find himself. Sansa deepens her hold on her reality. Characters that we thought might possibly be dead appear. People we hope are dead seem to be spotted everywhere and nowhere reliable. All this book gave me was more questions.

I've passed the novel on to several friends as they read through the entire series and gobbled them up in speedy succession. They saw less of the gaps and enjoyed the heady rush with one who has just discovered a new love. I'm hoping to have that feeling as GRRM wraps up the series over the next two (?) novels.

Please note, this is part of the same world as the Turners (they even appear)...this is not a book about the Turner boys.

I picked this up before reading either Ash or Mark's story and it was my introduction to the Turners in general and served as a lovely taste of Milan's style. A quick, enjoyable read.

Another nice one for the 500 Kingdoms. If you accept the stories are meant to be light-hearted and pre-teen appropriate fantasy/romance then you won't be disappointed. They're a bit of a twist on the standard versions of the fairy tales so don't go in expecting Robin McKinley's Beauty/Rose redux or even ML's own Fire Rose.

a good quick read. Not quite the M&M Smith of Regency - partially because they find out so early and work together grudgingly almost right away. It's cute, light-hearted in the way they deal with the spy business, and it is more believeable than most in their treatment of how a woman deals with infant/child loss completely differently than a man.

This is why I picked up the series (House of Rohan) to see the lead up to this book. The first few chapters (sent via a chapter-a-day site) had so much promise and such possibility, only to unravel rather quickly. By the time you get to the end where everyone is happily wedded (or about to be) you're having moments of "well of course he is" because that was totally expected from the second you met her best friend/his partner and then we have to have the nod to the illicit club, but it feels very forced. You can have a family series without all that forced nonsense...as long as you remind people there is a family, which this one takes (again) a long time to get to that point.

Felt like a middle book. Things happened, the plot was interesting, but not much moved forward if you were looking at this from a "series" POV. If this had to stand alone, I don't think it would have, imo.

Knowing this is a "House of Rohan" book and not knowing how the characters were supposed to be related, it took quite a while to get to the "OH! this is his son!" Also, the conceit of the dark pleasures club and the bastard byblow of the family being out to ruin the father seemed like it had to be forced rather than being something natural and wanted by the author.

A nice start to the series, but rather slow to get rolling on its own
