A thought provoking book. The standard sentiment is the lack of influence any of us have on our political system. However, we live in a capitalistic society. Perhaps we have more influence than we think. We vote every day with our dollars. What if we switched our vote from a straight "big box" ticket, to a "little guy down the road ticket"? McKibben lays out the reasons our current system is destined to fail and how we as individuals can fix it, finding some of that satisfaction and fulfillment we desperately seek in yet another shopping spree down at Wal-Mart.
This book is an easy read while still engaging the brain. It is riddled with great lines that I find myself reading aloud to my poor husband. IT will change the way you look at your buying habits. Everything from the oranges on the table to the roof over your head and how you power it can be background things or items to think seriously about.

This is a must read for anyone who is expecting a baby or is thinking about starting a family. You have to know the truth of what is happening in this country. Your OB/GYN sure as heck isn't going to tell you. Brock has a thoughtful, no nonsense style. She has done her research back to the beginnings of obstetric care in the US. She also witnessed first hand the kinds of births women are having in the US and got some people on the inside to talk candidly (sometimes on condition of anonymity) about what goes on "behind the scenes." I love it. Hopefully it will make more people aware of the tragedy we are calling birth in the US and precipitate change. But given the way hospitals, insurers and ACOG work, I seriously doubt it will happen until the public gets more thoroughly aware and outraged.

Just read it and gain a new view on the food you eat. Your body will thank you and you can finally make peace with food.

Harder to get into than Dante Club, but I enjoyed Pearl's theories and his process for solving the Poe Question.

Gory, Gory, Gory! I don't usually like things like this, but I couldn't put it down. A good intellectual murder mystery.

I have to read this to keep up with 9yo! It's is great-very well organized, complex ideas explained clearly, with copious illustrations. It is a science text in and of itself for now, and I expect we'll use it as a jumping off point for further research as he gets older

I've never laughed so hard reading a murder mystery. It's probably so funny because I've spent time up in N Idaho and kinda know what towns and places he is using for "inspiration." But it's a good read even if you've never been in Idaho.
