Hmmm...something about myself? I obviously love love to read! My weakness is Fantasy and SciFi, but I find myself truly satisfied by books from various genres. Favorites range from Pride and Prejudice to the God of Small Things to 100 Years of Solitude to the Dark Tower Series.

I currently work for San Francisco Head Start as an Early... more »

    Hello,
I just read your post to Mocha (Am I The Only One~Women Speak). Your comments touched me. Your kind, supportive words to Mocha could also apply to you ("wonderful person...does everything to help other people.")
It upset, but unfortunatley, did not surprise me when I read how you are having problems with your school adm. (I like to call them standardistos.) So many hard working, caring, devoted educators today come up against so much administrivia and, worst of all, being told (forced) to teach in ways they know are less effective that they become discouraged and many leave. I hope you have colleagues and/or personal friends that you can go to to vent. This inanity in the school systems of teaching to the test instead of to the child, of treating schools like businesses, of wanting teachers to be robots teaching robots has got to stop. How did we get into such a mess?! My heart goes out to you. Try your best to shut your door and do what you know is best. Don't let the sytem win.

It really didn't seem like that long. Time sure flies. I loved the Handmaid's Tale; it was very well-written. She is a great writer. I was relieved and a little miffed at the end part that took place in the future. Relief for the fact that that time period was over, but upset with the fact that those people would only acknowledge the time-period to be an unintelligent mistake, unable to identify with the people and the fear they lived with. It is kind of shocking, though I am sure that she intended it to be so, but still the officials just laughed at the historical event. It kind of puts history into a different kind of context. I did read Oryx and Crake by her, but I believe I was a little disturbed after reading it. It was similar to but not exactly like the disturbing feeling I got after reading The Lovely Bones. The writing was still good though. I was told to read her novel, "The Blind Assassin," but I don't think it is a dystopic novel.

As for The Road... one of my husband's friends told me to read it and I think I would have to agree with you: strange but interesting. It definitely wasn't what I was expecting. It felt more like a short story than novel. I heard they made it into a movie; it comes out next year sometime. I really don't see how they can do much with it unless they add to it. But I've never read All the Pretty Horses or No Country for Old Men, so I guess I can't say much.

As for me, I really haven't read anything amazing lately. I read Pemberley by the Sea by Abigail Reynolds. It is a modern day love story, Pride and Prejudice style. P&P is my favorite Jane Austen book, so I guess it makes sense that I enjoyed it. I have never liked the variations or additions that others have made to P&P because I think it is perfect just the way it is. But Pemberley by the Sea is completely different characters, just modernized, so to speak. I heard that she put out two different editions. I read the second one (2008), and thought it was written just the way it was supposed to be, so I don't want to ever know what it was like before this latest edition. I told a few of my friends about it, but they didn't have it at their libraries. I am going to have to lend them my copy if they can't get it through interlibrary loans.

Though I'm not one for graphic novels, The Watchmen was good. And I enjoyed, The Blood of Flowers. The Jane Austen Book Club fell way short of expectations. I just finished rereading the Harry Potter series, so I think I'm going to go back to The Interpreter of Maladies. Is the Glass Castle any good?

We will be reading The Pickwick Papers this winter. I hope you'll be joining!

Also, Jeannette B also expressed interest in Anna Karenina. We read that as a group last summer, although the discussion was only carried by myself and one other member. If you and Jeannette would like to revive the discussion, please do! I loved the book so much, I might join in!
