Hmmm...something about myself? I obviously love love to read! My weakness is Fantasy and SciFi, but I find myself truly satisfied by books from various genres. Favorites range from Pride and Prejudice to the God of Small Things to 100 Years of Solitude to the Dark Tower Series.

I am currently working with autistic children and looking...more »

Yah, I have a book that I just can't seem to pick up (A Prayer for Owen Meany). I have tried and tried again. I just need to sit down and read it. I have read A Child Called It, and the two books after it in an education class in college I think. I sometimes wonder at the level to which humanity can sink yet also at the ways people can persevere against all odds.

I just finished The Book Thief, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I have always been intrigued by WWII, and this perspective, though fictional, was compelling and at some points, made my heart ache. It is narrated by Death and follows the life of a young girl through WWII. I won't say any more in case you read it, but I loved it.

I did read Anthem. I should probably put that on my "Read" list, and I did enjoy it. It helps that it was written around the beginning of WWII, so it kind of related. The protagonist had a strong voice, particularly near the end. Though I am a little iffy on The Golden One's reason for following him. To get away from the world of "we", for love, or even following her own inner voice, I can understand, but I tend to like equality, though hers were more focal. It was a good novella though and will help when reading The Fountainhead. Read anything good lately?

Hey.... sorry about that... it has been busy around here... with birthdays, weddings, and a concert, so i haven't really gotten to touch anything new, unfortunately, just old things like harry potter or the kushiel's legacy series. You read anything fascinating? Did you finish Dune? Or the Satanic Verses? How did you like them? I have yet to read the Satanic Verses, but it is on my list.

I've heard "Fountains of Paradise" spotllights the space elevator. I agree, "Childhood's End" is good but I guessed that the alien had to look like a devil, the reason they kept their appearance secret, so wasn't so wowed by that book. Have you read, "Songs of Distant Earth"? Probably my favorite, that or "City and the Stars".

Tangled Skein gets a bit confusing, and the last one in the series gets a little maudlin, but Green Mother and For Love of Evil are so good, especially if you in any way like conflicted love stories.

The Shining is definitely one of my faves; I've read it several times to the point where I had to deposit this last version in the recycle bin since the pages were falling out :/ Ah well...it's not like I don't have other things to read!

Here, check this link out: http://www.booksalefinder.com/CAB.html#X1603

Looks like there is one coming up the week after next in Pal Alto. I've been to that one and found it hit or miss...the very first time I went to it, I think I left with 4 or 5 bags, though, so it might be worth checking out as your first one. Enjoy, enjoy, and try not to get addicted the way I did :/

    Rory Gilmore Book Club News:

I've begun some discussion topics for Part One of The Fountainhead. I found some really great questions that should get us going on good discussion threads. I hope you'll be joining in.

Also, if you do not have the introduction by Ayn Rand in your copy of the book, please send me an Admin message. Unless everyone has it, it is definitely worth it for me to type out the whole thing and get it up on the board!

Cool! But, you are no longer on my "Members with similar shelves"! Don't think they've updated that in a while and have shortened it to ten people with the shelfari remodel. Did you ever find yours? It's now in the "Members" section under "just for you".

Unfortunately I've had to put Rama II on hold since I have to be doing some work reading lately. =(

You are probably right. I did go to the library and get Anthem, so afterwards I will start on The Fountainhead. I have never read the Satanic Verses, though I do believe it is on my list. So many books, I feel like I will never have the time to finish them all.

Dune.... I love Dune. You've read the Enders Game series, so think of it sort of like that when a bunch of planets are occupied. Each planet is looked after by a House, and they all answer to the Emperor. The "royal" class is made up of Houses, and one of them is House Atreides. That specific house is sent to Dune, wherein the plot thickens and political plots and intrigues are intertwined with the significance of the world that owns Spice. All right, I should probably stop before I keep going ruin something for you.

You have so many books that interest me; I'll start with "A Light in the Attic", "Native Son, "Narrative of Frederick Douglas". I also see that you have a host of books written by your favorite authors. I'd like to know more about them and their work.

Good! You will have to tell me how you like it. I had my mother-in-law read it, but she was looking for more of a story and not enjoying how beautifully it was written and how everything seemed to be connected.

I have never read The Fountainhead before. And I have yet to begin reading it since I am trying to finish Oryx and Crake, Blink, and Devices and Desires. I also got two other books from the library.... in the end, I believe I may just be procrastinating.
