    Out of Africa

Nothing like the film by the way! If you're looking for the romance between Karen Blixen and Denys Finch-Hatton then the best you'll get is that he makes a lot of appearances. Nothing like the film by the way! If you're looking for the romance between Karen Blixen and Denys Finch-Hatton then the best you'll get is that he makes a lot of appearances. This is a non-fiction story about Africa; the landscape, the people, the animals and the way that it can get into your soul. It definitely made me want to go to Kenya and there was a real hint of nostalgia for what is now gone. Blixen writes in detail of her impressions of running a coffee plantation - it isn't really chronological, there are clearly huge bits that are simply brushed over, but it was a powerful read and I'm glad I have.

I really enjoyed this post-apocalyptic novel. It is written in a simple, straightforward style although the narrator moves between present day and memory often. It tells the story of Hig, one of a small number of survivors, how he has managed to survive so long, what happened to humanity as we know it and what the end has done to mankind now. Deeply saddening but uplifting as well. I would recommend it.

The Not So Secret Emails Of Coco Pinchard: (A Romantic Comedy)

Was pleasantly surprised by this. It's a bit Bridget-Jones-like in that the heroine is a 40something, chain-smoking, life completely topsy-turvy, loveable figure. She has a tenuous grip on reality and after discovering her husband in the arms of another woman has to find a way of reaching...

Was pleasantly surprised by this. It's a bit Bridget-Jones-like in that the heroine is a 40something, chain-smoking, life completely topsy-turvy, loveable figure. She has a tenuous grip on reality and after discovering her husband in the arms of another woman has to find a way of reaching normality. With a band of equally dysfunctional friends and relatives this book takes us through a year in Coco's life. It's entirely written in e-mail form which I think may be the reason why I liked it - you don't read the replies but you know what they are all saying.

    There Be Dragons

Sweet Christmas fairytale - a very quick read and works on the whole morality of good versus evil, magic and granting wishes, arranged marriages and dragons. It didn't flow brilliantly but it was a nice story with a feel-good vibe.

Having recently finished reading Bel Ami by Maupassant, I was struck by the similarity in plot line. A carpenter's son is raised into high society by means of his connections. Julien Sorel is extremely intelligent, but also incredibly arrogant and contriving. There are moments when I felt sympathy for him, but on the whole my sympathies lay with other characters - those whom he used in order to advance himself. Julien has a lack of pity for others while feeling that he rightfully should be the object of other's pity. He has a number of affairs which eventually leads to his downfall. I have to say I found this leaving a slightly uncomfortable feeling as I didn't feel that Julien ever felt actual remorse, nor did I think that he learnt much as a character. He continued to use people right up to the end of the novel and it didn't make for comfortable reading.

That said, the style is easy to read and, while it is a long novel, it is not a difficult one. It examines the differences of those in high society with those of the lower ranks and the main character at times reminded me of Dostoevsky's Raskolnikov in Crime and Punishment. I thought it was well-written, a good translation and an interesting read. I suspect I missed a lot of the deeper themes of the novel as I was reading it as a novel, not as an object of discussion. As such, I enjoyed it but came away with a number of thoughts on the human character and whether we ever do actually learn from our mistakes.

    The Innocence of Father Brown

This was a quirky book. Stories of mysteries with Father Brown in them. He does remind you somewhat of Sherlock Holmes.

I would class this book as Young Adult/Fantasy. It centers around a Kingdom of talking Bears. Once you get past that, the storyline is so-so. It is very basic in parts and the dialogue at times is lacking. The story centres around the return to the Kingdom of ancient powers that were banished long long ago by an evil tyrant. Evercloud, a human, taken in and raised by the bears, along with his cousin, Riverpaw, and his uncle Whiteclaw (both bears), set out upon the quest to resurrect an Ancient to battle the tyrant.
The book follows a very crude and basic "quest" plot. Overall the book was readable, but not well written.
