My main reading interest for the moment is paranormal mystery but I do change reading moods every once in a while.
Magical realism, steampunk, and cyberpunk has been tantalizing my interest lately.
I've also been known to be in the following... more »

Hey Racethom.. How are things with you? Business picking up or still stagnant?

Not much to report really. Work is crazy busy, no recession in dentistry. Unfortunately I'm not the dentist, but I run the place for him so he needs me.. LOL

I've had a run of bad health, not on my deathbed but was in hospital for a few days. Still ongoing with what's up with me. Don't know if I'll ever get it sorted. The joys of being a woman and all that.

    Reading anything good?

I'm just pretty stressed right now. Tomorrow I have the paper due, an assignment due, and registration to do, and I'm not ready for ANY of them. I also have my Psycology test on Thursday and I havent even finished the flash cards. I'm working on one of the assignments right now. :(

    Hey =)

I hope you have a good weekend.

The books I would recommend on Steampunk are H.G. Well's "The Time Machine", K.W. Jeter's "Morlock Night" and Gibson and Sterling's "The Difference Engine". You can also check out the following websites:

    http://www.steampunk.republika.pl/opedia.html
    http://brassgoggles.co.uk/blog/
    http://www.steam-con.com/
    http://www.steampunkmagazine.com/

Magical Realism really does encompass many things. Charles DeLint can be considered Magical Realism. And for authors who write in English in this subgenre I know Toni Morrison has been considered to write in this style. Many Latin American authors have been translated really well into English. (Isabel Allende, Garcia Marquez, Octavio Paz etc.) Gunter Grass, Abe Kobo, Salman Rushdie and Derek Walcott can all be considered magical realist. =)

    Let those be leads!

And I do so love black birds...great picture.

    Hi!

Steampunk is interesting indeed. I really enjoy the esthetics of it and the work ethic behind it. I like to make quality things. Anything worth doing, IS worth doing well. (Yes, that is a quote paraphrased). I can recommend a few websites or books for Steampunk, if you are interested. What have you found so far?

Magical Realism is extremely interesting in literature and art. I've even read some theoretical use of it in music. =) Have you read much in this genre? It generally overlaps other genres as well. I find foreign literature captures it really well but there are some American authors who are worthy of a read.

I will look forward to seeing your new icons. Did you make it?

    Have a good weekend!

Hi, I do like the Dresden Files but I'm not wildly into it. I've read the first 2 in the series and will read another...sometime. I still seem to be stuck on vampires. I've been listening to a few audiobooks too.

    Hey Amy, NEVER TMI!!
I'm glad that our ideas are pretty closely aligned. I hope to keep the involvement of the group up... I know its hard with a specific author such as Anne but I hope that since she does have a large following and so many books we can keep it alive for a while. The newer generations have never heard of her... hopefully we can get them out of their Twilight (not that its bad) runway and off into the other worlds of Sci-fi/ fantasy.
I have been thinking about some OT threads to start... I think I have a few that might catch on (fingers crossed)

I have been trying to add people through her books... have been since I started the group. however though there are thousands who have her books... so few are actually online often enough to give any input. I'm still trying!

Thanks for the input I appreciate it. Please feel free to keep posting OT posts!

Hi Racethorn! Just wanted to send a quick thank you for joining the group and all of your input thus far. I hope we can keep this good start throughout the year and not let this group die like too many other ones! I would love your thoughts and ideas on what I can do better or what works for this group!

Hey Amy - not on yahoo groups. Trying to keep up with shelfari is my one "dangerous" way of feeding my book addiction. I love finding people who read what I like and are willing to talk about it :+} Was very excited to see the McCaffrey group come up. Bev
