“It is about the tragedy of the whaleship Essex. Nathaniel Philbrick not only talks about the history of Nantucket village, but also slips in many details (almost as if to show off his extensive knowledge of the subject) about Nantucket culture. The detailed sketch of the Essex in the beggining of the book, the crew list, and the dramatic elements the author lends positively influence the book.”
