I am a picky reader, but with no other choice I will read anything and everything. I keep trying the library, but not so much. I am not a good customer. So instead I buy new and used, then promise myself I will take the books post-read to the used bookstore and redeem myself. I am not fond of serial writers. I like any genre if the writing is... more »

  • Misdiagnosis And Dual Diagnoses Of Gifted Children And Adults: ADHD, Bipolar, OCD, Asperger's, Depression, And Other Disorders
    • Rated 5 stars

If you have or suspect you have a gifted child, keep this book in your armory when dealing with teachers, school districts, pediatricians and psychologists. In a wave of federal funding for disabled students, many exceptionally bright kids are misdiagnosed with disordered psychologies that garner revenue for schools. Not intentionally, but schools do promote disorder "flags." However, most educators dont know how to differentiate disorders from overt ability. This book should be in every "Teachers Library." I am donating multiple copies to two districts. Respected authorities bring astounding clarity to understanding this baffling student. A book teachers, administrators, boards, and parents must read.

My favorite book. The only book I read twice, let alone again and again.

I could not put this down. At first I thought it would break my heart, and I wanted to set it aside, I could not The first book I have read cover to cover in one sitting in ages. Upon finish I took it to my husband and insisted he read it. This book is an instant classic. Inspiring to those of us that wont eat people. Cormac's style is searing, as literature should be.

    The Bell Jar

    by Sylvia Plath
    • Rated 0 stars

Something rings hollow. I only managed to read this book because it recently "appeared" in my house. At 21, I tried to read this, because I had found some of Plath's poetry interesting. I couldnt swallow.

Being 20 is self involvement, compounded by depression, it could become inhuman-Plath's point I suppose.

Even in depression, the multitude of layers never laid so flat. Maybe I am lucky-but Plath is mourning herself.

I cant digest this in a relative way...

Even at 20 and depressed, to me, Plath seemed ardently self involved.

Was she talented-For Sure. A reflection of the "Mothers Little Helper Times" absolutely.

Perhaps an independent girl smothered by her institutions...

I dont know. I just cant swallow.

  • Perfect Madness : Motherhood in the Age of Anxiety
    • Rated 0 stars

I was a new mom freshly promoted to "executive" when I read Perfect Madness. Warner put into perspective the professional & social issues I encountered. This book helped me form policies for the new mothers in my workforce. Also helped me establish internal policies I use to govern my own motherhood & career. I have few "real life mentors." This book grounded me during a critical period of my personal & professional life.

Cracked this book while "dead" tired, couldnt put it down. Possibly I reanimated to continue reading... My favorite genre, and intelligently written! YAY! I feel drawn back to reading this book in every spare moment. If I have a free night, it will be devoured. Let you know how I feel in the end.

I was disappointed. I liked the format of the book, but I was hoping stories and characters would tie together. In the end, the entire "novel" built up to nothing. I feel this would have done better as a collection of short stories with light character sketches. The story between the stories seemed like putrid self indulgence, more of more for no reason. I didnt even get the "heebie-jeebies," I wasted time looking for a good thrill in this novel. Instead I found tons of gross-out imagery, that wasnt effective despite the authors claim that people passed out left and right during his readings. I believe I should have rented Saw or Hostel instead. Less time invested, same feeling in the end.

Still working on this, good historical fiction and solid plot. Interesting characters. Hasnt sucked me in and pull me through just yet. Maybe we will get there... Yep, got there. I did enjoy this book. A few twists, lots of fun in the finish -entertaining!

Picked this up at the airport to occupy me on my flight. Sucked, but I finished it. Fun at times, but mostly boring. I gave it up for crosswords on the plane.
